Binary

Q.The title track of this record, “Binary,” combines a fun and funky groove with rather deep thoughts. How did that song come about?
A. Well, it’s just a poem, really. It started as a poem. And then I put a groove to it so that it wasn’t a show downer. [Laughs.] And it’s really just one little groove. I mean, sometimes, I feel like, fuck it, who needs a chorus, or a bridge, or whatever? Songs don’t always have to abide by structure. As far as the lyrics, the song starts with “in the blue glow of gizmos,” which is where most of us are residing these days—in isolation, interacting with machines. It’s like this rabbit hole of … lack of relationship. So for a while, I couldn’t stop thinking about the idea that consciousness is binary. The binary structure is actually underlying everything. From our atoms, to the positive and the negative, to the male and the female, to the dark and the light, to the life and the death—everything is a relationship of two things. And that kind of underlies this record in a lot of ways: the idea that everything is a dialogue, really.

Where are my sisters?
Where are my brothers?
Where is my family
Who takes care of each other?

Where are my sisters?
Where are my brothers?
Where is my family
Who takes care of each other?

In the blue glow of gizmos
Lurk despots in diapers
And cyborgs with bullhorns
And crackpots and snipers
Like robots so cold
With such ease they dismiss you
Sooner fuck you then kiss you
Sooner kick you and diss you

They got networks like insects
With webs of deception
They'll trap you, cocoon you
Like a department of correction
They come in all colors
And sexes and creeds
They got all kinda issues
They got all kinda needs

Little laboratory monkeys
Raised with no hugging
Just a wire cage mamma
And lab coats mugging
I feel your anger
I feel your pain
I feel the aching hole
In your soul that can't be named

Consciousness is binary
Consciousness is spinning
Consciousness is a circuit
When consciousness is winning
Consciousness is binary
Consciousness is spinning
Consciousness is a circuit
When consciousness is winning

You gotta complete the circuit
Alone there's just no knowing
Yeah energy is destructive
Unless it is flowing
In the connection lies the spark
In the connection lies the art
You gotta be up
In someone's countenance
Conversing with their heart

You gotta complete the circuit
Not just with human beings
With the sky above you
With the earth beneath your feet
When you complete the circuit
With everything that lives
Borders get blurry
And the rest is adjectives

(Where are my sisters?
Where are my brothers?
Where is my family
Who takes care of each other?)

Consciousness is binary
Consciousness is spinning

Where are my sisters?
Where are my brothers?
Where is my family
Who takes care of each other?

BINARIA

Dove sono le mie sorelle?
Dove sono i miei fratelli?
Dov'è la mia famiglia
Dove ci si bada l'uno all'altro?

Dove sono le mie sorelle?
Dove sono i miei fratelli?
Dov'è la mia famiglia
Dove ci si bada l'uno all'altro?

Nel bluore degli oggetti
Si celano despoti in pannolini
E cyborg coi megafoni
E pazzi, e cecchini
Come robot gelidi
Ti scartano via in un balletto
Prima ti fottono e poi ti baciano
Prima ti prendono a pedate e ti insultano

Hanno ragnatele come insetti
Con reti d'inganno [1]
Ti avvolgeranno in una trappola
Come in una galera
Arrivano con tutti i colori
E sessi, e fedi
Con questioni e bisogni
Di ogni tipo

Scimmiette da cavia
Cresciute senza affetto
Con la mamma in gabbietta
E camici bianchi all'assalto [2]
Percepisco la tua rabbia
Percepisco il tuo dolore
Percepisco il buco dolente
Nella tua anima innominabile

La coscienza è binaria
La coscienza è girevole
La coscienza è un circuito
Quando la coscienza prevale
La coscienza è binaria
La coscienza è girevole
La coscienza è un circuito
Quando la coscienza prevale

Devi completare il circuito
Da soli non si conosce niente
E sì, l'energia è distruttiva
A meno che non fluisca
Nei rapporti sta la scintilla
Di rapporti è fatta l'arte
E tu devi stare stare dentro
L'espressione di chi ti mostra
I propri sentimenti

I confini diventeranno vaghi
E tutto il resto sono aggettivi

(Dove sono le mie sorelle?
Dove sono i miei fratelli?
Dov'è la mia famiglia
Dove ci si bada l'uno all'altro?)

La coscienza è binaria
La coscienza è girevole

Dove sono le mie sorelle?
Dove sono i miei fratelli?
Dov'è la mia famiglia
Dove ci si bada l'uno all'altro?
