This quiet song delivers a powerful punch. It's an anti-war song that doesn't preach– yet it powerfully illustrates an unnerving fact: war's true cost to humanity is far greater than we can know.
Racconta la storia di uno scienziato che, con l'aiuto e l'appoggio della propria compagna, riesce a scoprire una cura per il cancro. Una scoperta che senz'altro cambierà il mondo e il corso della storia. Ma in realtà i genitori della donna sono morti in guerra ancor prima che lei fosse concepita, quindi lei non è "mai esistita". In seguito (nella seconda strofa) lo scienziato, che non ha alcun rapporto amoroso (dato che la donna non è mai esistita), si dedica completamente al lavoro e riesce lo stesso a scoprire una cura per il cancro. Ma è davvero così? In realtà i suoi antenati sono stati uccisi in guerra o in altri eventi (connessi con la guerra). E così alla fine si scopre che anche lui, lo scienziato che ha scoperto come curare il cancro, non è mai nato... Lasciandoci così con un senso di vuoto, di amarezza e sopratutto di riflessione. In altre parole: Non si sa mai dove vengono i grandi benefici per l'umanità, non sappiamo come una persona può contribuire, o ciò che i loro figli potrebbero contribuire, o i figli dei loro figli. La vita è troppo sacra e preziosa per essere tolta!
