Album “Mr Jeays”‎

This song is based on a true story from the Yugoslavian civil war. In 1993 a young couple from ‎either side of the ethnic divide, one a Muslim, the other a Serbian, tried to escape from the city. ‎Both were shot by snipers, and died in each other's arms, their bodies lying on the bridge where ‎they fell for several days as the warring factions blamed eachother. They were dubbed the “Romeo ‎& Juliet of Sarajevo” (Philip Jeays)‎

According to Dino Kapin, who was a Commander of a Croatian unit allied at the time with Bosnian ‎Army forces, around 17:00 hours, a man and a woman were seen approaching the bridge. As soon ‎as they were at the foot of the bridge, a shot was heard, and according to all sides involved in their ‎passage, the bullet hit Boško Brkić and killed him instantaneously. Another shot was heard and the ‎woman screamed, fell down wounded, but was not killed. She crawled over to her boyfriend, ‎cuddled him, hugged him, and died. It was observed that she was alive for at least 15 minutes after ‎the shooting. (en.wikipedia)‎

  • Somewhere to the East
    Where freezing winter winds blow
    Behind a city wall
    Call it Sarajevo
Two lovers wait together before the dawn
    Behind that city wall
    Trapped within the bedlam
    This man and woman stand
    A Serbian and a Muslim
    Hiding in the shadows there
He whispers as he strokes her hair

    Close your eyes my darling
Dream of days with brighter suns
Where hate will never find us
    Close your eyes my darling
See the sand of distant shores
Where death is far behind us
    Close your eyes my darling
And all the world will disappear
And all your fears will follow
    Close your eyes sweet angel
    We'll go on for evermore
    And be far away tomorrow

Wait for the night to meet the day
For the light to light our way
For the light of chance to shine on us
Wait till snipers clean their guns
    Or smile and turn away
Or dream of their own children
Wait for the right moment to come
    Run like you've never run
Run like the hounds of hell are upon you
Wait are you afraid? Well so am I
Take my hand and we'll fly
    Towards some better day

Go now run take my hand
    We'll go on for evermore
Where hate will never find us
Go now run see the sand
Feel the warming of the sun
Where death is far behind us

    Somewhere to the East
    Where freezing winter winds blow
    Beyond a city wall
    Call it Sarajevo
Two lovers lie together in the mud
    And beyond that city wall
    Far beyond that country
    Living our own lives
    Sitting warm and safe we
Turn our backs on race attacks
And tell ourselves it couldn't happen here
