Ispirò anche Bob Dylan per la sua “Subterranean Homesick Blues”.
Nella sua bellissima versione del 1968 Elvis Presley sostituì a “Yokohama” il “Vietnam”.
Per la cronaca, Yokohama è una città parecchio martoriata e sfigata in cui non andrei mai a vivere…
Nel 1923 fu squassata da un violentissimo terremoto che uccise più di 100.000 persone e, siccome i giapponesi credevano che il sisma fosse frutto di un maleficio, molti di loro non trovarono di meglio che scagliarsi contro la minoranza coreana presente in città, individuata come responsabile: nel corso del pogrom vennero uccisi per strada tutti quelli che sembravano avere una pronuncia coreana, sicchè a farne le spese furono pure cinesi o giapponesi con inflessioni di altre regioni… Le stime variano tra i 2.000 e i 7.000 morti…
La città di Yokohama fu ricostruita e nel 1945 fu nuovamente rasa al suolo, letteralmente carbonizzata dalla bombe incendiarie lanciate dall’aviazione statunitense: il 29 maggio di quell’anno, nell’arco della sola mattinata, in poco più di un’ora di bombardamento, i B-29 americani bruciarono vive circa 8.000 persone e distrussero il 50% della città…
In seguito Yokohama divenne la più importante base navale americana nel Giappone occupato, avamposto di tutte le operazioni durante la guerra di Corea, ed è a questa guerra che nel 1956 faceva riferimento il grande Chuck Berry: “Too much monkey business for me!!!”
