Watch out for the traffic
if you're standing in the middle of the road..
Watch out for traffic..
Here comes a lorry load of nuclear arms
The president assures us that their not meant to harm
We're only keeping them for our own protection
If you suggest anything else -well you're making the wrong connection
So you stand and watch the lorry go by
Who cares how many may ultimately die
if you're standing in the middle of the road:
Watch out for the traffic
Watch out for traffic
if you're standing in the middle of the road
Watch out for the traffic..
There goes a train load of nuclear waste
It's solidly packed so it's really quite safe
They're going to drop it down to the depths of the sea
But how many centuries before it starts to leak
So you stand and watch the train go by
Will your children's grandchildren ever ask you why
if you're standing in the middle of the road
Watch out for the traffic..
Watch out for traffic
if you're standing in the middle of the road
Watch out for the traffic.
[guitar]
There goes a shipload of toxic waste
Their shipping it put to Africa or some other place
its a way oh helping them overcome their national debt
They've agreed to let us pay them so no-one will be upset
it's in their own interests to capitalize our dirt
Dispose of it safely and no-one will get hurt.
if you're standing in the middle of the road
Watch out for traffic
If you're standing in the middle of the road
Watch out for the traffic..
if you're standing in the middle of the road..

Lyrics & Music by Adrian J. Pratt
Album: Passions, Pains and Protestations
Nuclear arms, radioactive waste and the disposal of other toxic substances.... all the usual subject matter of a poppy ditty..
To elaborate....
From a high of 65,000 active weapons in 1985, there are now nearly 8,000 active nuclear warheads and more than 22,000 total nuclear warheads in the world of 2010. Many of the decommissioned weapons have simply been stored or partially dismantled, not destroyed. It scares me in an age where some influential people really believe Armageddon is the only final solution that they may consider hastening the day! I just don't swallow the theory that no lunatic would actually press the button. (Ever seen Dr. Strangelove?)
The disposal of nuclear waste is another scary consideration. In 1946 the United States sank containers of radioactive waste in the Pacific Ocean some 50 miles off the California coast. In the late 1950's, the International Atomic Energy Agency banned the dumping of high-level radioactive waste.
However, the ban was ignored by many nations, in particular the Soviet Union. It remains unclear how much and exactly what waste lies in the depths of our oceans, nor what the long term effects of any leakage may yet be.
In fact getting rid of all the e-waste and toxic stuff we generate has become a nightmare. one strategy is for rich nations to pay developing nations to get rid of it for them... 80% of toxic electronic waste is shipped off to Africa or Asia to be dismantled and further treated. Often it is simply thrown into open air pits or burned in acid baths, whose run off then pollutes rice fields and run offs that provide drinking water to rural areas. The resulting health problems are severe... watch the video link below !

So... "Watch out for the Traffic".
"I wrote the song whilst in Liverpool, I think around 1987. Michael Jackson was at the height of his fame and had played Aintree Racecourse. The music was so loud that we could hear the concert 5 miles away at our house in Stoneycroft. My favourite MJ song at the time was 'Man in the Mirror' ... with its theme of needing to make a change. A rather tongue-in-cheek homage to the pop-master is reflected in the jerky vocal track.
The whole thing was recorded on a Teac 4-Track, with a Yamaha RX 11 Drum machine and a Roland D10 keyboard... synced by a Commodore C64 computer. Pretty darn ancient equipment, but a brave attempt, nevertheless. Very 80's.. LOL! :)
