*

The following is the first song by a Palestinian author appearing in our collection.

Unhappily enough, I was not able to find the original lyrics in the Arabic alphabet. So, I only transcribe a rough transliteration in the Latin alphabet, slighlty adjusted and more adherent to a "scientific" transcription than that, Dutch-flavored, I took from the Belgian website:
http://www.kontrarie.be/repertorium.php?page=150.

Anyway, the title of the song is highly significative: "We are no terrorists"
Someone might find its subject and content very shocking, no doubt also because –as in the case of Vietnamese writing and singing about Vietnam war- we usually consider things only from our point of view, even more so when the matter is about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In adding this song to the "Antiwar Songs" collection, I will not mask my feelings: I am very far from approving, or better still ready to condemn, certain statements made by the author in the lyrics of his song, especially about the Jews who "crucified Jesus" and "do not believe in any holy writ" (unhappily, two main points of Christian and Occidental antisemitism, at least until Vatican II) and about the alleged "profanation of the holy city of Jerusalem". But looking for for reference to vague or noncommittal "peace" in a song like this, written by a Palestinian living in a constant war situation, would be just hot air; this song witnesses strongly for this situation and could not be neglected in our collection.

Nevertheless, I hope that my inserting in this collection a number of songs by Israeli and Jewish authors concerned with Shoah and the refusal of aggression and war will preserve me and this site from any accusation of "antisemitism", an accusation to opposers of the Israeli government which has become so fashionable in certain political (right-wing) milieus.

On the other side, I agree with other statements made in this song. It is my hope that everybody may live in peace and justice in that land, one day or another.
Perhaps, The most authentic "antiwar spirit" of a song like this is just its evidence for the point of no return war may bring reciprocal hatred.
And it is daily news, damn it.

NON SIAMO TERRORISTI

Noi non siamo terroristi,
siamo uomini liberi,
musulmani e cristiani

WIJ ZIJN GEEN TERRORISTEN

We zijn geen terroristen,
We zijn vrije mensen, Christenen en moslims,
We zijn allebei Arabische volkeren.
We delen hetzelfde standpunt

En we geloven in onze rechtvaardige zaak
Ons land Palestina zal voor altijd Arabisch blijven.

English Version by Riccardo Venturi (2004)
WE ARE NO TERRORISTS

We are no terrorists,
we are free people
Muslims and Christians,
we all are Arab peoples.
We share the same point of view,
we strongly believe in national unity and faith
and we want to free Palestina from occupation.
Long live Arab Palestina!

They strike us with missiles
and we strike them back with stones.
They have seized our Al-Aqsa mosque
and betray history.
They crucified Jesus, the son of the Christian church
and profaned the holy city of Jerusalem.
They killed Lebanese children
they occupied Sinai and Golan
and now they call us "terrorists".

The Israelis bring war
and sow division and hatred
splitting us into peoples:
this is a game the Israelis know so well.
The Zionists are tyrants and unjust
and do not believe in any holy writ.
They are the cause of terrorism,
they are enemies of mankind.

We are no aggressors.
The Israelis attacked us
and occupied our country.
This is our country,
they came and conquered it.
We are in the truth
and believe in the rightfulness of our cause:
Palestina, our country, will remain forever Arab.
