“I Ain't Marching Anymore”, del 1964, inizia con l'omonima canzone, celeberrima e uno degli inni riconosciuti dell'opposizione alla guerra nel Vietnam, e si chiude con questa “Here's to the State of Mississippi”, che nel 1974 Phil Ochs aggiornerà in Here's To The State Of Richard Nixon, una violentissima requisitoria contro il presidente dello scandalo Watergate (e della guerra indocinese). Altrettanto violenta era stata la requisitoria originale contro lo stato del Mississippi, contro il razzismo che vi regnava, contro le sue istituzioni e le chiese. Qualche parola anche su Paula Pedersen, che nel video allegato a questa pagina interpreta, in modo assai bello e commovente, la canzone di Phil Ochs. Paula Pedersen non è una cantante professionista: è una nota sessuologa e psicologa del comportamento. Assieme a due altre donne ha formato uno dei più bizzarri trii vocali che si possano immaginare, le "Three Altos": una è Sara Thomsen, apprezzata e impegnata folksinger, e l'altra è Amy Bernstein, rabbina israelita e cantrice in un tempio. Mai pubblicata in album, ma solo in 45 giri, è una delle ultime canzoni scritte da Phil Ochs prima del tunnel finale della depressione che lo portò al suicidio due anni dopo. Si tratta di una riscrittura, o di una parodia, di una sua precedente canzone intitolata "Here's To The State Of Mississippi"; probabilmente, una delle più violente requisitorie contro Richard Nixon mai concepite.
E la cosa singolare, ma non troppo, è che basta sostituire "George W. Bush" a "Richard Nixon", senza cambiare una virgola (l'hanno anche fatto!).
Nella canzone si nomina il "reverendo" ultraconservatore Billy Graham, il cui seguito è stato larghissimo fino alla sua morte, avvenuta pochi mesi fa. Secondo unanimi giudizi, Billy Graham ha contribuito in modo decisivo alla rinascita della "nuova destra" ultrareligiosa americana. George W. Bush si è "convertito", su sua stessa ammissione, proprio ascoltando i suoi sermoni.

Eddie Vedder, il cantante dei Pearl Jam, sta cantando (in giro per il mondo e non sempre insieme al suo gruppo) una cover di questa canzone in cui - come preconizzava Riccardo- ha sostituito George W. Bush a Nixon. Sembra che le parole siano state scritte insieme a Tim Robbins.
Come nel caso di Bruce Springsteen con Bring Them Home... cambiano i personaggi ma le canzoni, anche molto vecchie, vanno benissimo lo stesso.

He sang it at a rally following his performance at Carneige Hall that year. He mentions one line from the song "I think I'll join the National Liberation Front". The song appears to have not been released nor does it appear in Broadside. Perhaps it was never sung again."
Update: Bill said that he exchanged e-mail with a person who said that he saw Phil Ochs sing this song at a demonstration in Central Park. He also said that the record company would not allow Phil to record the song because they objected to a line in the song which Phil refused to take out.

La Baia dei porci (Bahía de Cochinos) è una stretta insenatura nella parte centro-meridionale dell'isola di Cuba. Divenne nota per un tentativo di invasione di Cuba effettuato il 17 aprile 1961 da 1.500 anti-castristi emigrati negli Stati Uniti e oppositori del governo di Fidel Castro.
Lo sbarco nella Baia dei porci fu l'inizio del tentativo di invasione; ideata durante la presidenza di Dwight Eisenhower, l'operazione fu autorizzata dal suo successore John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

"On the morning of April 10, 1963, the USS Thresher (SSN 593) proceeded to conduct sea trials about 200 miles off the coast of Cape Cod. At 9:13 a.m., the USS Skylark (a surface vessel assigned to assist Thresher) received a signal, via underwater telephone, indicating that the submarine was experiencing minor difficulties, have positive up-angle, attempting to blow.
Shortly afterward, the Skylark received a series of garbled, undecipherable message fragments from the Thresher. At 9:18 a.m., the Skylark’s sonar picked up the sounds of the submarine breaking apart. All 129 hands were lost -- 112 military and 17 civilian technicians.

LC has three holdings under "Rooney, John Jerome, 1866-1934." The _Collected Poems_, presumably including "Men Behind the Guns," was published in 1938: 137 pages of text, 21 of front matter, including "A glance at the life of John Jerome Rooney" (p. ix-xv). _Literary manuscripts, 1900-1934_ is summarised as "Autograph drafts (1900-1934) of the poems of John Jerome Rooney," and the biographical note says "Poet, jurist, and lawyer." Rare Book and Special Collections has what seems to be a pamphlet or handbill with "Men Behind the Guns," and the notes quote from the author's forward "First published in The New York sun (morning edition, May 18, 1898)".

On the LP this song was replaced with Bullets Of Mexico, which was included on the CD as an extra track. Although, some LP's apparently were not subject to replacement: someone from Australia reports buying a copy in 1965 like this, as does someone in the states (the latter was a mono LP).

As for the topic of this topical song: It's not just looking backward to the Spanish Civil War, and the contemporary problem wasn't just US military sales to Spain. Tourism to Franco Spain really was a crisis-of-conscience issue for mildly left-wing travelers in the 1960s: a beautiful country, and unbeatable prices, but yes, the government was still headed by Hitler's old (or oldest) ally.
Una tipica "topical song" di Phil Ochs, che però non guarda soltanto alla guerra civile spagnola, ma anche alle ben contemporanee vendite di armi alla Spagna franchista da parte degli USA. Il turismo nella Spagna franchista provocò serie crisi di coscienza nella middle class di sinistra negli USA degli anni'60: un paese bellissimo e prezzi imbattibili, ma il governo era ancora guidato dal vecchio (o dal più vecchio) alleato di Hitler.
Una tipica "topical song" di Phil Ochs, che però non guarda soltanto alla guerra civile spagnola, ma anche alle ben contemporanee vendite di armi alla Spagna franchista da parte degli USA. La canzone parla del sindacalista e leader agrario messicano Rubén Jaramillo, comunista, fondatore dell'Unione dei Produttori di Canna da Zucchero e del Partito Agrario Operaio dello stato del Morel (PAOM), fatto assassinare dall'esercito messicano, assieme a tutta la sua famiglia, il 26 maggio 1958 a Tlaquiltenango. L'ordine era probabilmente arrivato dalla potente lobby dei latifondisti e, in ultima analisi, dallo stesso governo messicano.

"Pam Raver says: Phil wrote 'One More Parade' in Cleveland one night when he was emceeing a performance by the late Bob Gibson. He caught a guitar riff which he played for Gibson after the show and it became those decending bass notes that march through much of the song." Shortly after Phil Ochs' death, the folksinger Harry Chapin wrote the song The Parade's Still Passing By with exact reference to this song. Chapin died tragically 1981 in a car crash.

Avevamo, con mille rimpianti, “chiuso” la sezione dedicata a Phil Ochs con il suo disperato testamento, No More Songs; evidentemente non avevamo tenuto conto della vitalità del grande Phil, e soprattutto delle canzoni che non aveva mai inserito negli album in studio. L'album “Songs for Broadside”, noto anche come “Phil Ochs sings for Broadside” o “Broadside Ballads”, era il decimo volume di canzoni pubblicato dalla rivista “Broadside Magazine”, che raccoglieva testi composti per la libera circolazione (nella tradizione anglosassone, il “Broadside” è il “foglio volante” su cui venivano stampate canzoni e ballate cronachistiche, in vendita per pochi soldi nelle strade; una tradizione presente anche in Italia e in altri...
