Per il 25 Aprile 2021 Francesco Camattini rivisita un noto brano della tradizione popolare: “Il testamento del capitano”. - accompagnato da Alessandro Sgobbio al pianoforte.
La canzone fa parte del lavoro discografico del cantautore parmigiano “A costo di non tornare” (2021) che mette in “scena” una sorta di libro laico delle beatitudini e trae la propria ispirazione da temi di forte attualità.
In questa toccante rielaborazione in chiave elettronica del noto brano - inciso nel nostro immaginario collettivo - Camattini mette in scena e fa trasparire uno struggente inno alla pace, attraverso la voce di un alpino che detta le sue ultime volontà ai suoi compagni di lotta. Recently at a concert after I had sung an anti-war Gaelic song called An Eala Bhan, written in the trenches in 1916 and still often sung today, an Italian lady sang for me Stelle Alpinis.
I liked the words, but the tune is actually that of a mawkish English music-hall song from the 1890s with many rude parodies. It is called She Was Poor But She Was Honest.
The writer may have heard such a version sung by British soldiers.
Sadly, it is difficult for British people to appreciate the Italian song.

"When the War Was On" is a call and response blues song recorded in 1929 by Blind Willie Johnson and Willie B. Harris, who is thought to have been his first wife. Johnson plays bottleneck guitar, and sings throughout in his 'growl' (false bass) voice; Harris sings soprano.
The war referred to is World War I (1914–18). The lyrics reference U.S. President Wilson (1913–21) and the German Kaiser; the United States entered the war in 1917.
Unusually for Johnson, the song deals with a temporal rather than a spiritual subject.

Se permettete, trascrivo Monte Canino da una registrazione di circa 25 anni fa, su cassetta.
La canzone mostra il disagio dei soldati nel vedersi mandati al macello da fanatici (e sanguinari) comandanti militari, spesso allo scoperto sotto il fuoco delle mitraglie austriache. L'imperativo era "attaccare e sfondare", altrimenti si veniva deferiti al tribunale di guerra.
Durante la ritirata di Dunkerque gli inglesi furono accusati di codardia. Risposero: un soldato che scappa è buono per un'altra volta.

Brano conosciuto anche con altri titoli (Alpini in montagna, Al comando dei nostri ufficiali) la cui prima esecuzione accertata risale al 1897: in questa prima versione, aveva un carattere patriottico-celebrativo. La melodia riprendeva un modulo musicale ampiamente utilizzato dai cantastorie dell’Italia settentrionale nei decenni precedenti il conflitto ed era comune a un altro canto diffuso in diverse varianti nella pianura padana, che durante la guerra assunse un significato di dissenso e protesta: Addio padre e madre addio. La melodia è anche la stessa, semplificata, di O Venezia che sei la più bella, diffusa nel 1850 a ricordo della sanguinosa repressione austriaca dei moti veneziani del 1848. Dalla raccolta di Gian Luigi Beccaria nelle Langhe proviene un altro testo inedito, assai interessante. Noi non vogliamo più fare il militare è un canto registrato a Dogliani da un certo Andrea Borra, di cui non si conoscono i dati biografici, ma che probabilmente era un militante dell'idea socialista o anarchica.
Un testo collocabile negli ultimi anni di guerra, certamente dopo la Rivoluzione d'Ottobre.
Da Castelli-Jona-Lovatto, Al rombo del cannon. Grande Guerra e canto popolare, Neri Pozza, 2018, pag. 745.

Addio padre e madre addio

La versione cantata da Palma Facchetti (contadina e operaia, classe 1909) nell'LP che nel 1966 I Dischi del Sole dedicano alla Grande Guerra.
Palma Facchetti esegue il testo su una melodia in tre quarti che richiama ritmicamente l'aria di Addio padre, ma percorre una linea melodica assai diversa in tonalità minore.
Il richiamo ai "ribelli", il babbo che è in guerra "nei deserti", la generica definizione di "nemico" invece che "tedesco" o "austriaco" sono elementi che sembrano anche in questo caso pre-datare il canto alle guerre d'Africa.

La Prima guerra mondiale del 1914-1918 anticipò molti aspetti delle atrocità della guerra moderna. Clemente Rebora espresse il suo orrore di soldato, congedato a seguito delle ferite causate dallo scoppio di una granata, nella poesia “Voce di vedetta morta”:
C'è un corpo in poltiglia
Con crespe di faccia, affiorante
Sul lezzo dell'aria sbranata.
Frode la terra.

Caporetto, 24 ottobre 1917 : non un episodio di vigliaccheria ma la rivolta dei fanti contadini, il proletariato dell'esercito come li ha chiamati Curzio Malaparte, i figli di troia come li chiamavano alcuni ufficiali.
Stanchi di marcire nelle buche fangose, rosi dai pidocchi, stanchi di uccidere e farsi uccidere da poveri come loro.
Una rivolta che nessuno ha voluto o saputo guidare.
Caporetto, 24 ottobre 1917 : non un episodio di vigliaccheria ma la rivolta dei fanti contadini, il proletariato dell'esercito come li ha chiamati Curzio Malaparte, i figli di troia come li chiamavano alcuni ufficiali.

These lyrics have been written, assumably soon after Ralph Chaplin's original ones, by an unknown Finnish-American author, propably a Wobbly, i.e. a member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), or »tuplajuulainen« (a double-u'er) as the Finnish Wobblies used to call themselves.

Christmas Truce was our highest priority when we decided to write songs about World War One. Not only was it the most requested topic from our fans, but it was, for us, the most emotional story from the war. This song took us years to create since we wanted the music to reflect the mood honestly and it was a big challenge, but we feel we managed to write a song that captures the spirit of this day, over a century ago.

1917
1917 was written largely about the Battle of Passchendaele fought between July and December 1917 in some of the worst conditions of the whole war, and described by Lloyd George as "one of the greatest disasters of the war ... No soldier of any intelligence now defends this senseless campaign ..."
The song also references the changing political situations, the Russian Revolution and French army mutiny, as well as the less well known British mutiny at Étaples.
Finally 1917 addresses the executions of 306 British and Commonwealth soldiers in World War One, many of whom were suffering from shell shock and unfairly branded cowards. There is a little nod to Magnum's superb song on the subject Les Morts Dansant in the lyrics.

Il ne faut pas croire, Lucien l’âne mon ami, il ne faut pas croire que comme cette version française d’Hungernot – FAMINE commence de la même façon que la chanson de Claude Lemesle « Par dix, par cent, par mille... », que chantait Melina Mercouri, comme elle commence de cette même façon, il ne faut pas croire qu’elle raconte la même chose. Soixante-cinq ans après Hungersnot, Melina appelait la Grèce à la rébellion contre la dictature des Colonels. Erich Mühsam, c’était en 1916, lui s’en prend à la guerre et il le fait dans la guerre, en pleine guerre. Il s’en prend à Guerre et à sa sœur, Famine. Sœur cadette ? Sœur aînée ? Allez savoir qui de Guerre ou de Faim est venue au monde la première ?
Personnellement, dit Lucien l’âne, je les ai souvent prises pour des sœurs jumelles.
