BAGNET NA BROŃ | SHOOT THEM DEAD |
| |
Kiedy przyjdą podpalić dom, | When they come to burn your home, |
ten, w którym mieszkasz - Polskę, | where you live - Poland, |
kiedy rzucą przed siebie grom | when they throw their thunderbolt |
kiedy runą żelaznym wojskiem | when they fall in combat |
i pod drzwiami staną, i nocą | and against your doors they thud |
kolbami w drzwi załomocą - | with wooden barrels stained with blood, |
ty, ze snu podnosząc skroń, | you, awaken late at night |
stań u drzwi. | quit your bed. |
Bagnet na broń! | Stand and fight! |
Trzeba krwi! | Shoot them dead! |
| |
Są w ojczyźnie rachunki krzywd, | Since this country's bill of wrongs |
ale krwi nie odmówi nikt: | drain red blood from breasts and songs, |
wysączymy ją z piersi i z pieśni. | end your homeland's long ordeal. |
Cóż, że nieraz smakował gorzko | What if Poland's prison bread |
na tej ziemi więzienny chleb? | stings the tongue with bitter taste? |
Za tę dłoń podniesioną nad Polską - | Put a bullet in their heads |
kula w łeb! | for attacking what's not theirs. |
| |
Ogniomistrzu i serc, i słów, | Blazemaster of word and heart, |
poeto, nie w pieśni troska. | Now a poem is a trench |
Dzisiaj wiersz - to strzelecki rów, | erase the sadness from your art, |
okrzyk i rozkaz: | and shout, and order, and command: |
Bagnet na broń! | "shoot them dead!" |
| |
Bagnet na broń! | Shoot them dead! |
A gdyby umierać przyszło, | and even if it's our last day, |
przypomnimy, co rzekł Cambronne,(1) | remember what Cambronne once said. |
i powiemy to samo nad Wisłą. | We will say these words again. |
