JOHNNY I HARDLY KNEW YE | JOHNNY, TI RICONOSCO APPENA |
While goin' the road to sweet Athy, hurroo, hurroo | Percorrendo la strada per la dolce Dublino [*1], ohimé, ohimé |
While goin' the road to sweet Athy, hurroo, hurroo | Percorrendo la strada per la dolce Dublino, ohimé, ohimé, |
While goin' the road to sweet Athy, | Percorrendo la strada per la dolce Dublino |
A stick in me hand and a drop in me eye, | Con un bastone in mano e una lacrima all’occhio |
A doleful damsel I heard cry, | Sentii gridare una dolente fanciulla : |
Johnny I hardly knew ye. | Johnny, ti riconosco appena. |
With your guns and drums and drums and guns, hurroo, hurroo | Coi tuoi fucili e i tamburi e tamburi e fucili, ohimé, ohimé, |
With your guns and drums and drums and guns, hurroo, hurroo | Coi tuoi fucili e i tamburi e tamburi e fucili, ohimé, ohimé, |
With your guns and drums and drums and guns, | Coi tuoi fucili e i tamburi e tamburi e fucili |
The enemy nearly slew ye | Il nemico ti ha quasi ammazzato |
Oh my darling dear, Ye look so queer | Oh, mio caro, mio caro, sembri così strano, |
Johnny I hardly knew ye. | Johnny, ti riconosco appena. |
Where are the eyes that were so mild, hurroo, hurroo | Dove sono quegli occhi che erano così buoni, ohimé, ohimé, |
Where are the eyes that were so mild, hurroo, hurroo | Dove sono quegli occhi che erano così buoni, ohimé, ohimé, |
Where are the eyes that were so mild, | Dove sono quegli occhi che erano così buoni, |
When my heart you so beguiled | Quando il mio cuore tanto incantavi |
Why did ye sci-daddle from me and the child | Perché sei scappato da me e da tuo figlio? |
Oh Johnny, I hardly knew ye | Johnny, ti riconosco appena. |
Where are the legs with which you run, hurroo, hurroo | Dove sono le gambe con cui correvi, ohimé, ohimé, |
Where are the legs with which you run, hurroo, hurroo | Dove sono le gambe con cui correvi, ohimé, ohimé, |
Where are the legs with which you run, | Dove sono le gambe con cui correvi |
When first you went to carry a gun | Quando per la prima volta andasti a portare un fucile, |
Indeed your dancing days are done | Certo che i giorni delle feste da ballo sono finiti: |
Oh Johnny, I hardly knew ye | Johnny, ti riconosco appena. |
Ye haven't an arm, ye haven't a leg, hurroo, hurroo | Ti manca un braccio, ti manca una gamba, ohimé, ohimé, |
Ye haven't an arm, ye haven't a leg, hurroo, hurroo | Ti manca un braccio, ti manca una gamba, ohimé, ohimé, |
Ye haven't an arm, ye haven't a leg, | Ti manca un braccio, ti manca una gamba, |
Ye're an armless, boneless, chickenless egg | Sei un monco senz’ossa come un uovo senza il pulcino |
Ye'll have to put with a bowl out to beg | Dovrai pigliare un piattino e andare a mendicare, |
Oh Johnny I hardly knew ye | Johnny, ti riconosco appena. |
I'm happy for to see ye home, hurroo, hurroo | Sono contenta di vederti a casa, ohimé, ohimé, |
I'm happy for to see ye home, hurroo, hurroo | Sono contenta di vederti a casa, ohimé, ohimé, |
I'm happy for to see ye home, | Sono contenta di vederti a casa, |
All from the island of Ceylon; | Tornato dall’isola di Ceylon; |
So low in the flesh, so high in the bone | Con la carne così moscia [*2] e con le ossa ancora in piedi, |
Oh Johnny I hardly knew ye | Oh, Johnny, ti riconosco appena |
The enemy never slew ye | Il nemico ti ha quasi ammazzato, |
Oh, my darling dear you look so queer | oh mio caro, mio caro, sembri così strano. |
