For conspiring to kill a Nazi officer, the Germans sent Kulisiewicz's teenage half-sister Łucja to the Ravensbrück concentration camp in 1944. On learning of her imprisonment, Kulisiewicz wrote this ballad, a fantasy-compilation of childhood legends and folktales whose villains, heroes, and strange, twisting plots brought to mind aspects of his own experience of life in a concentration camp. In the song, the wolf is based on the title character of a favorite childhood tale of Kulisiewicz, Bajka o żelaznym wilku (Story of the Steel Wolf, 1911) of Wacław Sieroszewski. The dragon was a legendary nemesis of early Polish settlers. Krak was a mythical dragon-slayer and founder of Krakow. In 1970, Martha and the Vandellas released the Vietnam single I Should Be Proud, which leaned towards the anti-war side of the debate and displayed an interesting change in opinion on the war from 1968-1970.

Klaus Christian von Wrochem è nato il 20 gennaio 1940 a Dippoldiswalde, antica cittadina in ciò che reca il chilometrico e pittoresco nome di Circondario della Svizzera Sassone e dei Monti Metalliferi Orientali, al confine tra la Germania e l'attuale Repubblica Ceca. Appartiene per nascita a una nobilissima e antica casata: i Von Wrochem sono attestati fin dal 1379, con un cavaliere di nome Wrochuo. One form of torture routinely meted out at Sachsenhausen went under the innocent name of “Sport”. “My gate” recalls a typically malicious competition devised by the SS, the “Indian Dance”. As guards barked out the moves, prisoners were forced rapidly to raise their arms, look to the sky, whirl around, drop to the ground and stand again. This sequence would be repeated over and over. Kulisiewicz reports that inmates “vomited after such 'dancing', that the entire Apellplatz [assembly area] swayed before one's eyes, and with it the damned gate of the SS command”. Kulisiewicz first heard this popular central European tune sung to the Serbo-Croatian lyric, “Moja mala nema mane”.

Un brano protopunk potente e fieramente antimilitarista di un artista tutto da riscoprire. Purtroppo il testo completo non si trova da nessuna parte e ho dovuto trascriverlo parzialmente all'ascolto con alcune lacune (ogni correzione è benvenuta!)

Come Hippie From Olema, una parodia/risposta (in questo caso nello stile di David Peel sarcastica e estremista) alla canzone Okie from Muskogee, classico country "reazionario" di Merle Haggard. David Peel la cantò anche in televisione, accompagnato dall'amico John Lennon e da Yoko Ono, produttori del suo terzo disco.

David Peel è stato sicuramente un precursore del punk, nella musica (un protopunk acustico e da strada) e nei testi irriverenti. Grazie a questo album David Peel fu notato e "riscoperto" da John Lennon che, nel suo periodo più politico, produsse l'album successivo della band. E forse lo stesso Lennon scrivendo la sua God aveva in mente anche questa omonima canzone, molto più sarcastica e diretta!

J’en ai entendu beaucoup de versions, dit Lucien l’âne en riant, mais à l’origine de ma mémoire, j’ai gardé celle-ci – assez cohérente, même si je pense qu’elle camoufle une autre signification plus ancienne et mystérieuse, liée à l’histoire de la ville et du Comté de Foix. La voici dans son intégralité :

On y reviendra prochainement, je le promets une fois. Cependant, ici, il s’agit d’une chanson d’Henri Tachan, un de ces chanteurs-auteurs de leurs propres chansons, un de ceux qui ne tenaient pas leur langue dans la poche, comme, par exemple : Brassens, Ferré, Brel, Fanon, Béranger.

"Angelo Serighelli, classe 1950, è stato un chitarrista, cantante e cantautore della scena musicale del bergamasco. Tutti lo hanno più semplicemente conosciuto con il soprannome di India, che pare gli sia stato attribuito per la sua particolare predilezione per certe sonorità orientali già dalla fine degli anni '60. Nel corso della sua carriera ha militato, a cavallo tra gli anni '60 e '70, nei "Raminghi", band bergamasca di stampo progressive con sonorità di tipo psichedelico. Realizzarono tre 45 giri e un album (tutti con etichetta Bentler) tra il 1970 e il 1975. (...) At Sachsenhausen, certain members of the Polish gentry sought to preserve their high-caste status by co-operating with the camp command. "It's cold, Sir!" challenges this "turncoat" behavior by ridiculing two upper-class Prominents, pseudonymously called Lulusiński and The Count. Both were informers, responsible for denouncing numerous underground activists to the Reich criminal police. Kulisiewicz's impudent gesture itself met with reprisal. In the middle of the night, in February 1945, he was pulled from his barrack and interrogated by the SS. The police, not surprisingly, had been acting on a "tip" provided by collaborationist friends of Lulusiński and "The Count". "Nice, warm dame" is a sly reference to the "Puff" (brothel) Kulisiewicz attests had begun operating in Sachsenhausen in 1944.
