Korzenie gospel sięgają tzw. Sprirituals, pieśni „ludowych” tworzonych już od końca XVIII wieku przez czarnych niewolników w Ameryce. Stanowiły one mieszankę muzyki, którą przywieźli ze sobą z Afryki, oraz muzyki chrześcijańskiej - z którą zetknęli się na amerykańskich plantacjach. Początkowo odnosili się do chrześcijaństwa nieufnie - z ich punktu widzenia była to religia hipokryzji, wyznawali ją przecież zachowujący się bynajmniej nie po chrześcijańsku plantatorzy, ich właściciele. Jednocześnie fascynowały ich jednak historie biblijne, w których odnajdowali podobieństwo do własnych losów. У этой песни удивительная история.
Музыковеды говорят, что мелодия ее перекликается со старинной молитвой венецианских моряков, которая позже переросла в рождественский гимн, потом в негритянский спиричуэл, ставший популярным в негритянских баптистских церквях на юге США.
А ее первое "политическая" история такова:
В 1945 году началась забастовка рабочих компании American Tobacco.
К пикету бастующих рабочих из церкви вышла одна из участниц церковного хора негритянка Люсиль Симмонс и чтобы приободрить пикетчиков стала им петь: "В сердце своем я верю, что смогу когда-нибудь победить..".
Бастующие подпевали.

Dopo i CD di Mireille Safa, Beppe Chierici, Igor Lampis e Malva, ecco arrivare il “Nuovo Cantacronache 5” del musicista sardo Doc Pippus (al secolo Giuseppe Mereu), quinta perla di una collana che ha preso il via nel 2017 su impulso di Margot Galante Garrone (la mitica “Margot” dei Cantacronache) e di Beppe Chierici (traduttore e amico di Georges Brassens). Una serie edita dal Cenacolo di Ares che ripropone la tradizione del gruppo “Cantacronache“, operante negli anni 50-60, che si prefiggeva di “evadere dall’evasione” (slogan coniato da Italo Calvino, che ne faceva parte) contrapponendosi al costante disimpegno della musica che definiva “gastronomica” e che noi oggi, nell’epoca del digitale e di internet, potremmo chiamare “mordi e fuggi”.

Tutto quello che può fare è piegarsi e correre, sparare colpi mentre i proiettili lo sfiorano con un fischio fortissimo. Sente il rumore di una bomba al napalm che si avvicina ma mentre corre più veloce, viene gettato a terra dall'esplosione. Striscia via, si fa spazio tra i cadaveri in cerca di un riparo. Nemici o fratelli, non riesce a distinguerli, ma non è più importante perché tutto ciò che può vedere è il volto della morte.

E’ un antico canto tradizionale siciliano che figura nel Corpus dell’etnomusicologo Alberto Favara in tre testi diversi, noto anche con il titolo “Vinutu sugnu”. Il testo qui proposto si dice che provenga da Caronia, località tirrenica in provincia di Messina, ma non c’è da giurarci.
La vita del carcere è sempre dura, quando fuori non c’è nessuno ad aspettarti è ancora più pesante. Se poi anche l’illusione che correva su un filo esile tra l’inferno carcerario e il mondo esterno svanisce è la fine senza appello, la tomba dei sepolti vivi.

Le allusioni alla guerra sono abbastanza chiare e danno una prima chiave di lettura. Io però, forse esagero, ci ho trovato una metafora più allargata, sul senso della vita. Il ragazzo (boy) non è necessariamente un soldato ma è il giovane uomo che ha la vita davanti. Pronto per il paese può significare pronto a dare il tuo contributo, a servire a qualcosa. Raccontare la tua storia nel senso di dire la tua, prendere una posizione e costruire qualcosa di tuo finché sei vivo (prima che sia tempo di andare). Essendo un ex ragazzo mi piace pensarla così

C'è un uomo che mi ha inspirato per tutta la vita. Io l'ho visto da quando ero piccolo. Io l'ho visto da quando sono rimasto piccolo. Quel signore lì, che m'ha fatto sbagliare questo spettacolo informale entrando, è il maestro esimio ed eccellente Enzo Jannacci.

More than a century after his tragic death at the early age of 32, Dan Andersson still enjoys a broad popularity not only among the Swedish people but also those in neighboring Finland. His poems, often dealing with the harsh life of small people, have touched and inspired many musicians and lyricists in both countries as shown by the number of translations and interpretations available of this sad and compassionate story of the Beggar of Luossa.
The word Luossa refers to a locality in Dan Andersson's home village Skattlösberg in the province of Dalarna in central Sweden. In different Sámi languages, the word luos(s)a refers to salmon.

Non è che, in questa canzone, Richard Fariña "fece riferimento" a I [Once] Loved a Lass, canzone popolare scozzese settecentesca: ne riprese proprio la melodia, tale e quale. Qui, in un impeto di ricordi personali, te la faccio ascoltare dai Tannahill Weavers. Il fatto è che l'ho ascoltata così proprio dai Tannahill Weavers (coi quali ho cantato assieme in una canzone), in piazza Santa Croce nel luglio del 1982.
