Una canzone che il grande poeta e compositore scozzese Robert Burns scrisse solo qualche anno dopo aver rischiato di accettare, essendo in gravi difficoltà finanziarie, un impiego di contabile presso un’impresa di trafficanti di schiavi in Giamaica. All’epoca infatti non c’era ancora un gran interesse dell’opinione pubblica sul tema dell’abolizionismo, anzi, lo schiavismo era percepito come un dato di fatto quasi naturale (la prima organizzazione abolizionista in Inghilterra fu fondata dalla chiesa quacchera nel 1783).
Comunque, a giudicare dal testo del brano, forse fu anche il suo egualitarismo (oltre che, sicuramente, a ragioni più di ordine economico e logistico) ad impedire a Burns di mettersi al servizio di un mercante di schiavi.

Una celebre spoken song – già quasi un rap - di Oscar Brown Jr., poeta ed attivista per i diritti civili afroamericano scomparso nel 2005 e autore anche di Forty Acres And A Mule, presente su questo sito.
E’ il terribile racconto di una ”slave auction”, le aste nel corso delle quali gli schiavi africani venivano messi in vendita. Qui l’oggetto dell’asta è una giovane:
“Non fate caso alle sue lacrime, è solo uno dei suoi trucchetti.
550… chi offre 600?
E’ in salute, forte, ben messa.
Se ne può fare una buona domestica se viene adeguatamente frustata.
Forza, fatemi un’offerta!”

Canzone risalente a prima delle guerra d’indipendenza americana, raccolta nell’Hampshire inglese nella seconda metà dell’800 da George Barnet Gardiner, celebre “cacciatore” di folksongs.
Racconta di un detenuto spedito come tanti a scontare la sua pena nelle colonie oltre oceano, in Virginia. Inutile dire che per i prigionieri, trattati come schiavi, la detenzione si concludeva spesso con la morte.
Di questo brano esistono pure versioni molto simili– quella di Bob Hart e quella degli Steeleye Span – ma di epoca successiva in cui la “location” è spostata dalle Americhe all’Australia, dove il processo di colonizzazione, attuato pure lì attraverso la deportazione di criminali comuni e prigionieri politici, si intensificò proprio quando gli inglesi persero le proprie colonie americane.

"America loves Harry Truman, but the tens of thousands of children who were incinerated and the hundreds of thousands who died in agony didn't care if he was feisty and played the piano. Dick Nixon loved watching football and was a great dad, but the 100,000+ children who were burned to death, shot or had their family member die in a shower of bombs didn't appreciate those endearing aspects of his personality. GW may really be more personable than Gore but would boring Al have caused the death of between 35,000 and 600,000 Iraqi civilians thus far? Will any Great Man be held accountable? Not if they are an American president. They are portrayed as one of us. We know their family members' names and their vacation spots better than how many deaths they are directly responsible for.
At best some may question whether the 2,500 US soldiers deaths have been necessary in Iraq. Civilian deaths are not even counted by the US Army. It's just "collateral damage."

Leggendo il testo delle molte versioni della canzone Old Riley (Hey Rattler) di Leadbelly, mi sono imbattuto in un titolo che già echeggiava proprio in quel brano, “Long Summer Day”. E’ questa una canzone del micidiale duo californiano Two Gallants (così chiamatisi in omaggio a James Joyce) basata sul testo di una negro song la cui paternità viene attribuita a Moses “Clear Water” Platt oppure a James “Iron Head” Baker, due famosi interpreti di prison songs le cui voci vennero raccolte dai Lomax alla fine degli anni 30 presso il Central Farm Texas Penitentiary di Sugarland, in Texas, la stessa prigione in cui soggiornò per alcuni anni Leadbelly.

The hit song was actually inspired by Tennessee-native, Corporal Patrick Nixon, of the United States Marine Corps. He died in battle on March 23, 2003 after being ambushed while trying to secure a bridge in Nasiriyah, Iraq. After speaking to Nixon's father, Turnbull felt inspired to make his story into a song.

Non è ancora una canzone, ma solo un testo di Kavvadias che i musicisti - i quali hanno musicato la maggior parte dei componimenti del poeta marinaio - per ora hanno ignorato. Un testo struggente dedicato ai disperati battellieri addetti al rifornimento dei depositi di carbone per i piroscafi dell'Atlantico Settentrionale. Un lavoro scomparso adesso, ma indispensabile per i traffici marittimi del periodo tra le due guerre. Un lavoro per i dannati, non della terra, ma del mare.
Il mio inglese è quello di un semianalfabeta; ma credo - credo - che Kavvadias abbia inserito una -i- indebita nel sostantivo. O era anche lui come me, oppure ha tentato di sovrapporre i suoi "coaliers" ai "coolies" - altri dannati della terra e del mare - che ben conosceva nel suo frequentare i mari del sud. Canzone sicuramente dedicata a Bush Senior, il presidente responsabile della prima guerra del Golfo, poi portata a termine da suo figlio nel 2003 e ancora in corso… sono passati quasi 20 anni, 20 anni di morte e distruzione… E per gli iracheni, se contiamo anche gli anni che hanno passato nelle trincee a combattere contro l’Iran in una guerra, anche quella, voluta dagli USA e dal mondo occidentale, sono già 30 gli anni di guerra pressochè ininterrotta…
E poi ci stupiamo dell’odio che affligge questo maledetto pianeta…
Speriamo che il buco nero "SN 1979C" (ri)scoperto di recente ci inghiotta quanto prima…

Canzone che probabilmente prende spunto dalla battaglia delle Termopili del 480 a.C. dove – leggenda vuole che – 300 opliti spartani guidati da Leonida tennero testa a decine di migliaia di soldati persiani. Quando Serse intimò ai greci la resa e la consegna delle armi, Leonida rispose: "Μολὼν λαβέ", "Venite a prendervele!", e i trecento furono finalmente spazzati via.

A song for the veterans of all wars and any wars - not a lament, nor a protest, but a comment on the passing of time and the nature of men at war. Strong chorus and rhythm.
"Started with the first verse and chorus sometime in the mid-1970s, this is a song which was gradually built, then completed in 1996 when suddenly it hit me that the old Great War soldiers returning to the war cemeteries in France would soon be gone - indeed, they would have to be 100 years old. And that's what the song ultimately comments on: the distance of time, and the few remaining. But it's about more than that. It was also completed because my father, who was a bomber pilot in the 1945 war, had died; and I realised then that I had never finished any of the songs I started writing years before, and he's never heard a single one of them.
