Elsie's Song (Chat and Nuke You Talks)

Elsie's Song (Chat and Nuke You Talks)
The Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp Songbook

Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp was a peace camp established to protest at nuclear weapon being sited at RAF Greenham Common in Berkshire, England. The camp began in September 1981 after a Welsh group called "Women for Life on Earth" arrived at Greenham to protest against the decision of the Government to allow cruise missiles to be based there.

On 1 April 1983, tens of thousands of protestors formed a 14 mile human chain from Greenham to the Aldermaston nuclear power station and the ordnance factory at Burghfield.

On 4 April 1984, the women were evicted from the Common by Newbury District Council. However by nightfall the women all returned to reform the camp.

The last missiles left the camp in 1991 but the camp remained in place until 2000 after protestors won the right to house a memorial on the site.

"We grew up in Thatchers Britain BUT we had some great and politically aware bands and not the X Fucktor manufactured shit. Where are the new movement bands. We had The Specials, UB40, Madness and many more. The voice of disenchanted youth. It saddens me that there is none if that. Christ, even simply red were political." Going Down to Liverpool

Going Down to Liverpool

The Enemy Within (the Band)

The Enemy Within (the Band)
[1995]
Parole e musica di Ralph McTell
Nell'album intitolato “Sand in Your Shoes”

In Praise of Famous Men (and Women)
[1979-80]

The Right Honourable The Baroness Margaret Thatcher”.

King's Cross

King's Cross
[1987]
Scritta da Chris Lowe e Neil Tennant.
Nell’album intitolato “Actually”

30-Year War
[2013]
Scritta da James Dean Bradfield, Nick Jones e Sean Moore.
Nell’album intitolato “Rewind the Film”

Year War starts with the miners' strike and moves through Hillsborough, and it's a critique of the attack on the working classes over the last 30 years. It's the most spiteful, angry track on the album” (Nick Wire dei MSP)

I Did It for Alfie

I Did It for Alfie
2004
Un

The song is about Paul Kelleher, who walked into the Guildhall Art Gallery with a concealed baseball bat, and proceeded to knock the head off a statue of Margaret Thatcher. During his trial he said he had done it because "I am becoming increasingly worried as to what sort of a world I have brought my son (Alfie) into".

On 3 July 2002, Paul Kelleher decapitated a £150,000, eight-foot (2.4 m), 1.8-tonne (2.0-short-ton), marble statue of the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on display at the Guildhall Art Gallery in central London.

Having unsuccessfully swiped the statue with a Slazenger V600 cricket bat concealed in his trousers, Kelleher used a metal rope support stanchion to decapitate the statue. After the beheading, he waited to be arrested by the police who arrived minutes later. He said on capture, "I think it looks better like that."

The statue had been commissioned... (Continues)

In Memoriam: Margaret Thatcher

Back in 2005, anarchist collective Chumbawumba pre-sold an EP called In Memoriam: Margaret Thatcher which they would keep under wraps until the prime minister passed away. Since Thatcher did pass earlier this week, the band has delivered the EP and is also streaming the release online. Along with that, the band delivered a eulogy:
Let's make it clear: This is a cause to celebrate, to party, to stamp the dirt down. Tomorrow we can carry on shouting and writing and working and singing and striking against the successive governments that have so clearly followed Thatcher's Slash & Burn policies, none more so than the present lot. But for now, we can have a drink and a dance and propose a toast to the demise of someone who blighted so many people's lives for so long. If we must show a little reverence and decorum at this time,... (Continues)

Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead

Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead

Album "Miserabili"

L'ESPRESSO, 08 aprile 2013

Cosa ci ha lasciato la Thatcher
di Marco Paolini

L'ex premier inglese è morta a 88 anni.

(Continues)

The Fight for History

The Fight for History
[2004]
Album: We Validate! [2006]

"As you could probably guess from the lyrics to this song, it was written in 2004 shortly after Ronald Reagan died. As you can probably guess from the lyrics of most of my other songs, I was born in 1970 and grew up during the height of the Cold War over which Reagan and Thatcher reined supreme, and so spent an extremely jolly adolescence (sarcasm) convinced that at any moment the planet would be consumed in a nuclear war.

You can imagine, then, that I was a little annoyed when nearly all the reports of his life portrayed him as a great statesmen in favour of peace and love who bestrode world affairs like a kindly grandfather, leading us all into a beautiful future. This always seems to happen when old politicians die - I'm thinking especially of Enoch Powell's death, when commentators went out of their way NOT to call him a vile old racist - but this... Goose Green (Taking Tea With Pinochet)

Goose Green (Taking Tea With Pinochet)
Thatcher's work is still clear to be seen on both sides of the Irish Sea.
The greed and averice that prevailed in the British economy during her reign is still at large as the monstrous Celtic Tiger runs riot around this island. The cities are marked by a sky lined with cranes, while out in rural parts many are demented by the grant culture. It's as if the illness that was rampant in the City Of London has travelled like rabies in all directions, more, more for me and f,,, the sick and needy. When I say her recently take tea with Pinochet and laud him for his support during the Falklands War, I thought that perhaps the poor lady might be totally mad. But that would be to trivialise her absolute danger to us all. I sense her spirit in Garvaghy Road, Brick Lane, Soho, Hungerford, Harrods and anywhere greed is seen to be good or violence the answer, Christy Moore.

Maggie Thatcher's Dream

Maggie Thatcher's Dream
[2011]
Parole e musica di Grace Petrie
Nell’album intitolato “Mark My Words”

The Anti-Capitalist Roadshow
Celebrating subversion

Old England

Old England
[1985]
Album "This Is the Sea"

"Old England" is a criticism of Thatcherism, blaming Margaret Thatcher's economic policies for what The Waterboys perceived to be an increase in desperation amongst the young and poor in the England of that time, and a rise in drug addiction, specifically to heroin. The refrain, Old England is dying is a quote from James Joyce, and the lines You're asking what makes me sigh now / What it is makes me shudder so are from W.B. Yeats' poem, Mad as the Mist and Snow.

Protest song against the governing UK Conservative Party's legal restrictions on anyone working for a local authority "promoting" homosexuality,

Section 28 (commonly "Clause 28") of the Local Government Act 1988 was a controversial amendment to the United Kingdom's Local Government Act 1986, enacted on 24 May 1988 and repealed on 21 June 2000 in Scotland, and on 18 November 2003 in the rest of the UK by section 122 of the Local Government Act 2003. The amendment stated that a local authority "shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality" or "promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship".

Some people believed that Section 28 prohibited local councils from distributing any material, whether plays, leaflets, books, etc, that portrayed gay relationships... (Continues)

[1980]
Uscito come singolo in versione dub e poi incluso nell'album "I Just Can't Stop It" pubblicato lo stesso anno.

"The late '70s in England were troubled times: high unemployment, secession, the fear of nuclear war breaking out, the kind of fantasy end-of-the-century, end-of-the-world kind of feeling. And Margaret Thatcher came on, kind of like the last great hope of the British Empire. She'd actually been born above a grocery store in Nottingham, a working class city. But had developed airs and graces and a posh accent and kind of saw herself as being of the upper classes, which she wasn't. So it was sort of a false accent, and a false attitude that went with it. Then she fell head over heels with her teenage heartthrob, Ronald Reagan, and went about trying to dismantle any sense of social unity that England had: breaking the unions, letting people go out on strike and starve. The Iron Lady (Maggie May)

The Iron Lady (Maggie May)

Let's Start a War (Said Maggie One Day)

Black Boys On Mopeds

Black Boys On Mopeds
