Aperta dal suono di un gong, Vietnamese Baby non è di immediata interpretazione, anche perché il testo di Johansen è una sorta di dialogo o monologo interiore e non è chiaro chi sia il personaggio che parla in prima persona.
In ogni caso, nell'ultima strofa, Johansen dice chiaramente che che ciò che ha portato al disastro del Vietnam è stato il machismo spavaldo in due forme: la crudeltà classica del soldato che stupra e saccheggia, le cui azioni erano avallate dall'impero; e la convinzione imperialista che il diritto di infliggere distruzione di massa a una popolazione straniera fosse un diritto divino americano.

The Ballad of Jerry Norman Duffy
I was there on the night Jerry died not on hill 131 but on Ba Hoa mountain Quinhon with my searchlight. We got a call for a mission to provide light for hill 131 but the light was non functional and there was nothing we could do to help. Three weeks before we had placed motion sensor in the gully leading to the top of the hill. This was to give them early warning to movement in that area because that was the most likely place the enemy could approach from. Their was an equipment malfunction and needed another mission to complete our work, but that never was approved in time. Jerry died and other were injured as a result. It was hard to listen to the panic coming over the radio that night and not being able to help. I didn’t know Jerry’s fate till I got home and read it in Life magazine.

We haven't all been together for the Thanksgiving holiday since 1965. That was a long time ago. This holiday we decided to all get together at Rick's house for Thanksgiving, and we took a couple of pix at the old church which is also held up pretty well over the nearly 60 years since that fateful day back in '65.
Events that day became a newspaper article, which became a song, record, and a movie - It also became my life. Happily we outlived all of it, and remained friends.

The track "Please Mr. President" (Kent Records # K 45x446) by the blues man King Soloman, apparently based on the West Coast, recording with the Los Angeles label Kent (this is a different artist than the well-known soul singer Solomon Burke, ending with a "mon" rather than "man", also sometimes referred to as "King Solomon"). Released in 1966 with Lyndon Baines Johnson in the White House, the narrator of the song bitterly complained to the president about being sent to Vietnam. He loved his country and "never did get the notion to burn up my draft card", yet he warned the women of American that "Uncle Sam...sure can take your man". At the end of the song the soldier takes to hugging his pack and rifle to comfort him.

It included the line: "All these people were our friends not long ago, they fought Hitler, Mussolini, and Tōjō" - this could be a reference to the Vietnamese - a former World War Two ally, who had helped the US against Adolf Hitler (Germany), Benito Mussolini (Italy), and Tōjō (Japan)? Trịnh Thị Ngọ (1931-2016), soprannominata Hanoi Hannah, era una conduttrice radiofonica vietnamita che durante la guerra del Vietnam trasmetteva dal Nord Vietnam una trasmissione di propaganda per convincere i soldati yankee che la guerra che stavano combattendo era sbagliata. In perfetto inglese commentava le notizie dal fronte, fornendo anche informazioni precisissime sulla posizione delle truppe USA, cosa che colpiva particolarmente i soldati americani. i love this song and i only hope and pray that the radio stations do not bow to the pressures of the censors it is fantastic and i never knew what it meant untill some one told me that it was a in protesr t to rhe viet nam war is that true? regardles, irs a great song and it s a LOT bbetter than all the crap they put out today Kudos to you Terry!!!

Nella sua versione (di 18 minuti!) della canzone di George Harrison (il grande successo dal primo album solista dell'ex Beatle) registrata dal vivo con un coro gospel davanti a un pubblico formato in gran parte da soldati neri, la preghiera spirituale della canzone originale si trasforma in una potentissima canzone di protesta contro la guerra del Vietnam. Alla fine della canzone Nina Simone accusa direttamente Dio di essere un assassino per permettere guerre e stragi insensate.

Come detto (v. introduzione), la versione registrata nel 1972 dai Covered Wagon Musicians ed inserita nell’album We Say No To War! è quella con cui la canzone (o meglio, la poesia recitata dal serg. John Boychuk con sottofondo musicale di chitarra) inizia la sua vera storia di canzone contro la guerra. E’ senz’altro basata sul testo portato alla base americana di Mountain Home dal serg. Mike Elliot, ma rispetto a questo è più breve: alcune strofe sono state eliminate, ed altre disposte in modo differente (anche con lievi variazioni testuali). E’ questa versione che viene diffusa in tutto il mondo come messaggio contro la guerra in Vietnam (ad esempio, il testo sopra riprodotto proviene dalla rivista Equality, pubblicata dal 1965 al 1974 e destinata alle forze americane e NATO in Europa;...
