The Hiring Chain

The Hiring Chain
2021
Vocals: Sting
Original Music: Alessandro Cristofori and Diego Perugini for Stabbiolo Music

(Continues)

Every Bomb You Make

Every Bomb You Make
(1985)

Lyrics by Quentin Reynolds & James Glen
Music by Sting
Backing Track by The Police

"Every Bomb You Make" is a parody of the 1983 Police song, "Every Breath You Take.". The real Sting agreed to sing it in exchange for copies of every episode of the... (Continues)

The Police: Every Breath You Take

The Police: Every Breath You Take
(1983)
The Police

Album: Synchronicity
Words and music by Sting

(Continues)

Love is the Seventh Wave

Love is the Seventh Wave
da The Dream of the Blue Turtles (1985)

"Love Is the Seventh Wave" was the second single and second track from Sting's 1985 solo debut album The Dream of the Blue Turtles. The song is supposedly about love being the seventh wave, or the strongest wave in a series of waves, thus wiping out any sort of problems. It concludes with a brief, self-mocking reference to Sting's biggest hit song with The Police, "Every Breath You Take", which had been about the dark side of love that leads to sexual jealousy and obsession.

History Will Teach Us Nothing

History Will Teach Us Nothing
da "...Nothing like the sun" (1987)

I once asked my history teacher how we were expected to learn anything useful from his subject, when it seemed to me, to be nothing but a monotonous and sordid succession of robber baron scumbags devoid of any admirable human qualities.

I failed history.

The most palatable history of the world I ever read is only 120 pages long and part of Buckminster Fuller’s book, “Critical Path”. The robber baron scumbags are still there but some attempt is made to explain their pathology and why they’re still around today.

Driven To Tears

Driven To Tears
Words and music by Sting
Album: "Zenyattà Mondatta" (1980)

DRIVEN TO TEARS was written in '79 in some motel in the midwest of America. I was watching the news, starving children, legs to thin and weak to support themselves. An horrific irony that we have the technology to witness human tragedy but seem unable to prevent it.
Tears of rage were one thing but Band Aid was better

One World (Not Three)

One World (Not Three)
dall'album "Ghost in the machine" (1981)

Riproposta da Sting nell'album live "Bring on the night" (1986)

One World and Love is the Seventh Wave seemed an obvious segue.
The former was written while I lived in Ireland. It was during Bobby Sands' hunger strike which galvanised nationalist feeling at the time. It struck me that British Imperialism, Irish Nationalism and sectarian hatred are the same festering disease for which the emaciated body of a young man seemed a fitting and tragic symbol. I do believe that ONE WORLD IS ENOUGH FOR ALL OF US. I believe that blind obedience to a flag, nation, religion or ideology is abhorrent and ultimately evil.
Despite all this, the song is a joyful one, as is LOVE IS THE SEVENTH WAVE which was written in Barbados in '85 - we have to maintain some confidence that the world can be a better place no matter how depressing things seem to be. It is also possible to enjoy these songs and not think about any of this stuff.
