God Lord haue mercy on me!Dio abbia pietà di me.

Haille, master, and wether you will,"Bene, Signore, se così vi piace,
And wether ye like it best;E se così desiderate;"

And there we will take our reste.Ci prenderemo il nostro riposo.

I knowe wher is a gay castle,"So che è un bel castello
Is builded of lyme and stone;Fatto di pietra murata;
Within their is a gay ladie,C'è una bella signora
Her lord is riden and gone.E suo marito se n'è andato."

The ladie she lend on her castle-walle,La dama si sporgeva dalle mura
She loked vpp and downe;E guardava in su e in giù;
There was she ware of an host of men,Quando vide una turma di gente
Come riding to the towne.Che avanzava verso il castello.

Se yow, my meri men all,"Vedete, miei fedeli uomini,
And se yow what I see?Vedete quel che io vedo?
Yonder I see an host of men,Laggiù vedo una turma di gente
I muse who they bee.E mi domando chi siano."

She thought he had been her wed lord,Pensò fosse suo marito
As he comd riding home;Che tornava a casa a cavallo;
Then was it traitur Captain Care,E invece era Ker, il traditore,
The lord of Ester-towne.Il signore di Eastertown.

They wer no soner at supper sett,S'erano appena messi a tavola
Then after said the grace,E avevan detto la preghiera,

Wer lighte aboute the place.Alle porte scesero da cavallo.

Gyue ouer thi howsse, thou lady gay,"Dacci la tua casa, bella signora,
And I will make the a bande;E io ti farò una proposta:
To-nighte thou shall ly within my armes,Stanotte tu dormirai con me
To-morrowe thou shall ere my lande.E domani avrai le mie terre."

Then bespacke the eldest sonne,Parlò allora il figlio maggiore,
That was both whitt and redde:D'incarnato roseo e bianco;
O mother dere, geue ouer your howsse,"Madre cara, dagli la tua casa,
Or elles we shalbe deade.O presto saremo morti."

I will not geue ouer my hous, she saithe,"Non gli darò la mia casa", lei dice,
Not for feare of my lyffe;"Né temo per la mia vita;
It shalbe talked throughout the land,Se ne parlerà per tutto il Paese
The slaughter of a wyffe.Dell'assassinio di una donna.

Fetch me my pestilett,"Datemi la mia pistola,
And charge be my gonne,E caricatemi il cannone,
That I may shott at yonder bloddy-butcherChe voglio sparare a quel macellaio,
The lord of Ester-towne.Al signore di Eastertown."

Styffly vpon her wall she stode,Stava dritta sulle sue mura
And lett the pallettes flee;Facendo volare i proiettili;
But then she myst the blody butcherPerò mancò quel macellaio,
And she slew other three.Mentre uccise tre dei suoi uomini.

I will not geue ouer my hous, she saithe,"Non darò la mia casa," lei dice,
Neither for lord nor lowne;"Né a un signore, né a un pezzente;
Nor yet for traitour Captain Care,E neanche a Ker, quel traditore,
The lord of Ester-towne.Il signore di Eastertown.

I desire of Captain Care,"Chiedo al capitano Ker
And all his bloddye band,E alla sua banda sanguinaria
That he would saue my eldest sonne,Di risparmiare mio figlio maggiore,
The eare of all my lande.L'erede di tutte le mie terre."

Lap him in a shete, he sayth,"Avvolgilo in un lenzuolo," lui dice,
And let him down to me,"E calalo giù dalle mura;
And I shall take him in my armes,Lo prenderò fra le mie braccia
His waran shall I be.E gli farò da tutore."

The captayne sayd unto him selfe:Il capitano pensò fra sé e sé,
Wyth sped, before the rest,"Devo fare proprio presto";
He cut his tongue out of his head,Gli tagliò dalla testa la lingua
His hart out of his brest.E dal petto gli strappò il cuore.

He lapt them in a handkerchef,Li avvolse in un lenzuolo
And knet it of knotes three,E lo legò con tre nodi;
And cast them ouer the castell-wallLo gettò di là dalle mura
At that gay ladye.A quella bella signora.

Fye vpon the, Captain Care,"Vergognati, capitano Ker,
And all thy bloddy band!Tu e la tua banda sanguinaria!
For thou hast slayne my eldest sonne,Hai ucciso mio figlio maggiore,
The ayre of all my land.L'erede delle mie terre."

Then bespake the youngest sonne,Parlò allora il suo figlio minore
That sat on the nurses knee,Che stava in grembo alla balia:
Sayth, Mother gay, geue ouer your house;"Madre, dagli la tua casa,
It smoldereth me.Che mi sento soffocare!"

I woud geue my gold, she saith,"Darei tutto il mio oro
And so I wolde my ffee,E tutto il mio corredo
For a blaste of the westryn wind,Per una folata di ponente
To dryue the smoke from thee.Che mandasse via il fumo!"

The fire fell aboute her head;Il fuoco le cadeva addosso;
She toke up her children thre,Prese i suoi tre bambini
Seth, Babes, we are all dead.E disse, "Siamo tutti morti."

Then bespake the hye steward,Parlò allora il suo maggiordomo,
That is of hye degree:Che era uomo d'alto lignaggio;
Saith, Ladie gay, you are in close,Dice, "Signora, siete intrappolata,
Wether ye fighte or flee.Sia che lottiate o fuggiate."

Lord Hamleton dremd in his dream,Lord Hamilton vide in sogno
In Caruall where he laye,A Carvel, dove stava,
His halle were all of fyre,Che il suo castello era stato incendiato
His ladie slayne or daye.E che sua moglie giaceva uccisa.

Busk and bowne, my mery men all,"Miei uomini, state pronti,
Even and go ye with me;Avanti, venite con me:
For I dremd that my haal was on fyre,Ho sognato il mio castello in fiamme
My lady slayne or day.E mia moglie ch'era stata uccisa."

And like a worthi knighte;Dato che era un buon cavaliere;
And when he saw his hall burning,Quando vide il suo castello in fiamme
His harte was no dele lighte.Il suo cuore certo non si rallegrò.

He sett a trumpett till his mouth,Portò la tromba alla bocca
He blew as it plesd his grace;E suonò finche gli parve;
Twent score of HamlentonsQuattrocento degli Hamilton
Was light aboute the place.Accorsero allora alle porte.

As I do to-daye,Come l'ho saputo oggi,
Captain Care and all his menIl capitano Ker e i suoi uomini
Should not haue gone so quite.Non l'avrebbero fatta franca.

Fye vpon the, Captaine Care,"Vergognati, capitano Ker,
And all thy blody bande!Tu, e tutta la tua banda!
Thous haste slayne my lady gayHai ucciso la mia bella signora
More wurth then all thy lande.Che valeva più delle tue terre.

If thou had ought eny ill will, he saith,"Se ce l'avevi con me," disse,
Thou shoulde haue taken my lyffe,"Dovevi prenderti la mia vita,
And haue saved my children three,Non quella dei miei tre bambini
All and my louesome wyffe.E della mia amata sposa."
