Ulteriore versione inglese della poesia di Uhland, di Arthur...
I HAD A COMRADEI HAD ONE FAITHFUL COMRADE

In battle he was my comrade,I had one faithful comrade
None better I have had.'Ere we heard the trumpet's call,
The drum called us to fight,And we pledged our hearts forever
He always on my right,In battle joined together
In step, through good and bad.To beat the foe or fall.

A bullet it flew towards us,A musket shot came screaming
For him or meant for me?To seal his fate or mine
His life from mine it tore,Right at my feet he stumbled,
At my feet a piece of gore,And friendship's shrine it crumbled
As if a part of me.Around that friend of mine.

His hand reached up to hold mine. His hand is blindly seeking
I must re-load my gun.The clasp I cannot give
"My friend, I cannot ease your pain,For duty calls me onward
In life eternal we'll meet again,Farewell my dying comrade,
And walk once more as one."Our love shall ever live.
