e palpita l'infelice mio cuore,

e vita nuova, avanti rivoluzionari
affinché splenda un'alba tutta di luce.
THE PARTISAN’S MOTHER

In the middle of the war storm,
in the black darkness of fascism
you took the gun and you want, my son,
to fight as partisan up there on the mountains.

You don't want to spend your life as a slave,
you do not love the heavy bonds of slavery,
you took the gun, you want to fight
for the freedom of our homeland.

My son ,my eyes are filled with tears,
and my unhappy heart is palpitating,
my bowels are shattering into pieces
now that you're leaving with the other boys.

And yet, my son, the bell tolls,
It did come the hard moment of separation
and, as a Greek mother, I send you up there,
I do send you, golden eagle [1] of redemption.

[1] The terms have to be understood also as a traditional epithet of the Klephts and Armatoles (see note 4 at Στ'άρματα). As you can see, most of Greek partisans songs often refer to the heroes of the Greek Independence war of 1821.
