| Μέσα στην καταιγίδα του πολέμου, | In the middle of the war storm, |
| στου φασισμού τη μαύρη σκοτεινιά | in the black darkness of fascism |
| πήρες τουφέκι και θέλεις γιε μου | you took the gun and you want, my son, |
| να πας αντάρτης επάνω στα βουνά. | to fight as partisan up there on the mountains. |
| Σκλάβος δεν θέλεις εσύ να ζήσεις, | You don't want to spend your life as a slave, |
| σκλαβιάς δεν στέργεις σίδερα βαρειά, | you do not love the heavy bonds of slavery, |
| πήρες τουφέκι, θες να πολεμήσεις | you took the gun, you want to fight |
| για της πατρίδας μας τη λευτεριά. | for the freedom of our homeland. |
| Γεμίζουν, γιε μου, δάκρυα τα μάτια | My son ,my eyes are filled with tears, |
| και λαχταράει η δόλια μου η καρδιά, | and my unhappy heart is palpitating, |
| τα σωθικά μου γίνονται κομμάτια | my bowels are shattering into pieces |
| τώρα που φεύγεις με τ' άλλα τα παιδιά. | now that you're leaving with the other boys. |
| Μα όμως, γιε μου, χτυπά η καμπάνα, | And yet, my son, the bell tolls, |
| έφτασε η ώρα σκληρή του χωρισμού, | It did come the hard moment of separation |
| σε στέλνω 'γω σαν Ελληνίδα μάνα, | and, as a Greek mother, I send you up there, |
| σε στέλνω σταυραετό του λυτρωμού. | I do send you, golden eagle [1] of redemption. |
[1] The terms have to be understood also as a traditional epithet of the Klephts and Armatoles (see note 4 at Στ'άρματα). As you can see, most of Greek partisans songs often refer to the heroes of the Greek Independence war of 1821. |
