NELLE STRADEIN THE STREETS

Nelle strade si deciderà chi ha ragione,In the streets it will be decided who is right,
nelle strade il satrapo sarà strozzatoin the streets the satrap will be strangled
e dalla schiavitù avrà a germogliareand from slavery will have to sprout
la gemma nuova dell'amore.the new gem of love.

Nelle strade, nelle strade, sempre assieme a voi,In the streets, in the streets, always with you,
fratelli abbattuti da un ingiusto dardobrothers killed by an unfair dart
con voi nella morte, con voi nella vittoria, with you in death, with you in victory,
con voi dalla terra si disperde il nerume.with you to disperse the blackness of the earth.

Segrete, galere, campi di prigionia, [1]Dungeons, slammer, internment camps, [1]
lager intrisi di sangue,blood-soaked lagers,
ci abbraccian migliaia di fratellithousands of brothers
strappatici dal nostro fianco.torn off from our side.

Nelle strade, nelle strade, voi madri, voi mogli,In the streets, in the streets, you mothers, you wives,
voi tristi sorelle [2] con nere mantiglie, you sad sisters [2] with black mantillas,
la collera è un fiume torbido e gonfio, anger is a turbid and swollen river,

una piaga aperta è la Grecia.an open wound is Greece.
Villaggi bruciati, come una lampada,Torched villages, like a lamp,
ardono e si consumano del suo martirio.they burn and wear themselves out of his martyrdom.

Nelle strade, nelle strade intinte di sangue,In the streets, in the streets dipped in blood,
nella casa che avete chiuso parata a lutto,in the house you have closed plunged into mourning,
nella madre del partigiano, e chissà dove ancora, [3]in the partisan's mother, and who knows where else [3],
] [4]next to me a hungry child takes cover from the wind.] [4]

In alto i vostri cuori, fratelli! [5]Up your hearts, brothers!
In alto i vostri pugni, serrate le fileUp your fists, tighten the rows
del Mutuo Soccorso Ellenico,of the Hellenic Mutual Aid,
sono immense le nostre schiere.our ranks are immense.

Nelle strade, nelle strade intinte di sangueIn the streets, in the streets dipped in blood
di nuova vita sorge la verità.the truth arises to new life.
A base del mondo stan l'amore e l'allegria,At the basis of the world there are love and joy ,
si gonfiano larghi i petti di tutti. At the basis of the world there are love and joy ,

A base del mondo stan l'amore e l'allegria, everyone's breasts swell up.

[3] L'espressione idiomatica και δίνω και δίνω (lett. “e do, e do”) corrisponde in grandi linee a espressioni italiane come “e dai che ci ridai” e, in pratica, a “e via discorrendo”, o a un banale “eccetera eccetera”.

[1] In the greek text : Μπουντρούμια, κάτεργα, εξορίες . The first one is quite well translated as “dungeons”, the second one literally means “galleys” but I feel that “slammer” is more suitable in this case , the third one refers to people exiled (most to barren islands).

[2] In the greek text: αδελφούλες ,diminutive of sisters according to a typical greek way but not entailing a particular feeling such as tenderness or compassion.

[3] In the greek text: και δίνω και δίνω ,very close to “and so on and so forth”.

[4] The 5th and 6th stanzas have not been performed by Petros Pandis
