ΤΟ ΤΡΑΓΟΎΔΙ ΤΗΣ ΑΛΛΗΛΕΓΓΎΗΣ [ΣΤΟΥΣ ΔΡΌΜΟΥΣ] | IN THE STREETS |
Στους δρόμους θα κριθεί το δίκιο, | In the streets it will be decided who is right, |
στους δρόμους θα πνιγεί ο σατράπης | in the streets the satrap will be strangled |
κι απ’ την σκλαβιά θε να φυτρώσει | and from slavery will have to sprout |
| the new gem of love. |
Στους δρόμους, στους δρόμους και πάντα μαζί σας, | In the streets, in the streets, always with you, |
αδέλφια που πέσατε απ’ άδικο βόλι, | brothers killed by an unfair dart |
μαζί σας στο θάνατο, μαζί σας στη νίκη, | with you in death, with you in victory, |
| with you to disperse the blackness of the earth. |
| torn off from our side. |
Στους δρόμους, στους δρόμους μανάδες, γυναίκες | In the streets, in the streets, you mothers, you wives, |
πικρές αδελφούλες με μαύρα μαντήλια, | you sad sisters [2] with black mantillas, |
ποτάμι η οργή τους θολό φουσκωμένο, | anger is a turbid and swollen river, |
| their pale lips thunder a curse. |
| an open wound is Greece. |
Tου μαρτυρίου της καίει και λιώνει | Torched villages, like a lamp, |
| they burn and wear themselves out of his martyrdom. |
Στους δρόμους, στους δρόμους που βάφτηκαν μ’ αίμα | In the streets, in the streets dipped in blood, |
στο σπίτι που 'κλείστε στα μαύρα ντυμένο | in the house you have closed plunged into mourning, |
στη μάνα τ’ αντάρτη και δίνω και δίνω | in the partisan's mother, and who knows where else [3], |
] [1] | next to me a hungry child takes cover from the wind.] [4] |
| Up your hearts, brothers! |
ψηλά οι γροθιές σας, σφιχτά οι γραμμές μας | Up your fists, tighten the rows |
της Εθνικής Αλληλεγγύης | of the Hellenic Mutual Aid, |
| our ranks are immense. |
Στους δρόμους, στους δρόμους που βάφτηκαν μ’ αίμα | In the streets, in the streets dipped in blood |
| the truth arises to new life. |
Tου κόσμου θεμέλιο αγάπη και γέλιο | At the basis of the world there are love and joy , |
| At the basis of the world there are love and joy , |
Tου κόσμου θεμέλιο αγάπη και γέλιο | everyone's breasts swell up. |
| everyone's breasts swell up. |
| [1] In the greek text : Μπουντρούμια, κάτεργα, εξορίες . The first one is quite well translated as “dungeons”, the second one literally means “galleys” but I feel that “slammer” is more suitable in this case , the third one refers to people exiled (most to barren islands). [2] In the greek text: αδελφούλες ,diminutive of sisters according to a typical greek way but not entailing a particular feeling such as tenderness or compassion. [3] In the greek text: και δίνω και δίνω ,very close to “and so on and so forth”. [4] The 5th and 6th stanzas have not been performed by Petros Pandis |
