TOMTENTHE HOUSE-GOBLIN

Midvinternattens köld är hård,Cold is the night, and still, and strange,
stjärnorna gnistra och glimma.Stars they glitter and shimmer.
Alla sova i enslig gårdAll are asleep in the lonely grange
djupt under midnattstimma.Under the midnight's glimmer.
Månen vandrar sin tysta ban,On glides the moon in gulfs profound;
snön lyser vit på fur och gran,Snow on the firs and pines around.
snön lyser vit på taken.Snow on the roofs is gleaming.
Endast tomten är vaken.All but the goblin are dreaming.

Står där så grå vid ladgårdsdörr,Gray he stands at the barnyard door,
grå mot den vita driva,Gray by the drifts of white there,
tittar, som många vintrar förr,Looks, as oft he has looked before,
upp emot månens skiva,Up at the moon so bright there;
tittar mot skogen, där gran och furLooks at the woods, where the fir-trees tall
drar kring gården sin dunkla mur,Shut the grange in with their dusky wall;
grubblar, fast ej det lär båta,Ponders —some problem vexes,
över en underlig gåta.Some strange riddle perplexes —

För sin hand genom skägg och hår,Passes his hand o'er beard and hair,
skakar huvud och hätta -Shaking his head and cap then:
»nej, den gåtan är alltför svår,"Nay, that riddle's too hard, I swear,
nej, jag gissar ej detta» -I'll ne'er guess it mayhap then."
slår, som han plägar, inom kortBut, as his wont is, he soon drives out
slika spörjande tankar bort,All such thoughts of disturbing doubt.
går att ordna och pyssla,Frees his old head of dizziness.
går att sköta sin syssla.And turns him at once to business.

Går till visthus och redskapshus,First he tries if the locks are tight.
känner på alla låsen -Safe against every danger.
korna drömma vid månens ljusEach cow dreams in the pale moonlight
sommardrömmar i båsen;Summer dreams by her manger.
glömsk av sele och pisk och tömDobbin, forgetful of bits that gall.
Pålle i stallet har ock en dröm:Dreams like the cows in his well-filled stall,
krubban han lutar överLeaning his neck far over
fylls av doftande klöver; -Armfuls of fragrant clover.

Går till stängslet för lamm och får,Then through the bars he sees the sheep.
ser, hur de sova där inne;Watches how well they slumber.
går till hönsen, där tuppen stårEyes the cock on his perch asleep.
stolt på sin högsta pinne;Round him hens without number.
Karo i hundbots halm mår gott,Carlo wakes at the goblin's tread,
vaknar och viftar svansen smått,Wags then his tail and lifts his head;
Karo sin tomte känner,Well acquainted the two are,
de äro gode vänner.Friends that both tried and true are.

Tomten smyger sig sist att seLast the goblin slips in to see
husbondfolket det kära,How all the folk are faring.
länge och väl han märkt, att deLong have they known how faithfully
hålla hans flit i ära;He for their weal is caring.
barnens kammar han sen på tåTreading lightly on stealthy toes.
nalkas att se de söta små,Into the children's room he goes,
ingen må det förtycka:Looks at each tiny treasure:
det är hans största lycka.That is his greatest pleasure.

Så har han sett dem, far och son,So has he seen them, sire and son,
ren genom många lederYear by year in that room there
slumra som barn; men varifrånSleep first as children every one.
kommo de väl hit neder?Ah, but whence did they come there?
Släkte följde på släkte snart,This generation to that was heir.
blomstrade, åldrades, gick - men vart?Blossomed, grew old, and was gone - but where?
Gåtan, som icke låterThat is the hopeless, burning
gissa sig, kom så åter!Riddle ever returning.

Tomten vandrar till ladans loft:Back to the barn he goes to rest.
där har han bo och fästeWhere he has fixed his dwelling
högt på skullen i höets doft,Up in the loft near the swallow's nest.
nära vid svalans näste;Sweet there the hay is smelling.
nu är väl svalans boning tom,Empty the swallow's nest is now.
men till våren med blad och blomBack though he'll come when the grass and bough
kommer hon nog tillbaka,Bud in the warm spring weather,
följd av sin näpna maka.He and his mate together.

Då har hon alltid att kvittra omAlways they twitter away about
månget ett färdeminne,Places through which they've travelled,
intet likväl om gåtan, somCaring naught for the goblin's doubt.
rör sig i tomtens sinne.Though it were ne'er unravelled.
Genom en springa i ladans väggThrough a chink in one of the walls
lyser månen på gubbens skägg,Moonlight on the old goblin falls,
strimman på skägget blänker,White o'er his beard it wanders;
tomten grubblar och tänker.Still he puzzles and ponders.

Tyst är skogen och nejden all,Forest and field are silent all,
livet där ute är fruset,Frost their whole life congealing.
blott från fjärran av forsens fallSave that the roar of the waterfall
höres helt sakta bruset.Faintly from far is stealing.
Tomten lyssnar och, halvt i dröm,Then the goblin, half in a dream.
tycker sig höra tidens ström,Thinks it is Time's unpausing stream.
undrar, varthän den skall fara,Wonders whither 't is going.
undrar, var källan må vara.And from what spring 't is flowing.

Midvinternattens köld är hård,Cold is the night, and still, and strange.
stjärnorna gnistra och glimma.Stars they glitter and shimmer.
Alla sova i enslig gårdAll yet sleep in the lonely grange
gott intill morgontimma.Soundly till morn shall glimmer.
Månen sänker sin tysta ban,Now sinks the moon in night profound;
snön lyser vit på fur och gran,Snow on the firs and pines around,
snön lyser vit på taken.Snow on the roofs is gleaming.
Endast tomten är vaken.All but the goblin are dreaming.
