BALLATA AUTOCRITICAA SELF-CRITICIZING BALLAD

Sono dieci anni suonati che suonoTen years and more I have been playing
questa chitarra e che canto di cuoreThis guitar, and have been singing
canti di vario modello;Songs of various nature with all my heart;
già mille volte ho cambiato di tonoHow many times I've been changing tones,
dal do maggiore al do diesis minoreFrom C major to C sharp minor,
dal valzer allo stornello;Waltzes, stornelli,
colla ciaccona colla marcia turcaChaconnes, Turkish marches,
col madrigale la giga il flamencoMadrigals, gigs, flamencos,
la ciarda la controdanzaCzárdás, contradanses,
col tango col samba e con la mazurkaTangos, sambas, mazurkas,
dei vari ritmi ho esaurito l'elencoAnd well, the list isn't complete yet...
ma ho mai cambiato sostanza.But what I say is always the same.

Ho cantato sempreI've always been singing my songs
in base ad una convinzioneRooted in the firm belief
che la cosa più importanteThat the real core of everything
è battere il padrone;Should be defeating the masters;
ogni canto l'ho compostoAnd I have written all my songs
perché ci aiutasseSo that they can help us
a portare fino in fondoPut into complete practice
la lotta di classe;The principles of class struggle;
ho sperato che ogni strofaAnd my hope has always been
quando l'ho cantataThat every verse I've been singing
ci aiutasse a battereCan help us defeat
la proprietà privata.Private property.

Sono dieci anni che canto le lotteTen years and more I've been singing
e i mille scioperi e la strategiaStruggles, strikes and strategies
per far la rivoluzione;To make the revolution;
ma son dieci anni che canto le botteBut what I've done isn't anything but singing
e i caroselli della poliziaCops whacking, charging, crushing us with jeeps,
e le condanne in prigione;Sentences, jails and prison chains;
c'è il canto triste se siamo battutiMy songs are sad when we're defeated,
c'è il canto allegro se mille operaiOr merry when thousands of workers
scendono in piazza a lottare;Demonstrate and fight in the streets;
ma dopo tanti gorgheggi ed acutiBut after so many trillings and high notes
mi sono accorto che forse oramaiI became aware that singing and singing
non c'è più gusto a cantare.Has really lost much of its appeal.

Il padrone ci haWell, the masters got
uno stomaco da mille lireMoney-made guts,
e per quanta merda mangiThe more they eat shit,
la sa digerire;The easier they digest.
lui aumenta i prezziThey increase prices
se gli strappi più salariIf you finally get wage rise,
poi ti taglia i tempiThen they cut production times
e ti fa far più straordinari ;And load you with overtime;
figurarsi se i miei canti,So just think how much my songs
lui che ingoia tutto,Can be heavy to digest,
non ci riesce a digerirliThey eat 'em with peels an' bones,
e a farci sopra un rutto.Then they burp on our face.

Per quanti acuti abbia emesso di testaWith all my trillings and high tones
nessun padrone ha perduto un quattrinoNo master's ever lost a farthing
di rendita o di profitto;Of income or profit;
non basta un canto sia pur di protestaA song, and even a protest song
perché succeda che qualche inquilinoDoesn't never bring down
abbia ridotto l'affitto;The rent to any tenant;
un ritornello non serve per nienteNo refrain, no ballad, no tune
non c'è ballata che serva a qualcosaWill ever be good for anything,
né un ritmo di monferrinaNo baton blow will ever be made
per render soffice uno sfollagenteLighter by any folk dance,
per affrettare la morte gloriosaNo Yankee in Vietnam
di un yankee nell'Indocina.Will ever die quicker with a tarantelle.

Forse occorre cheAnd maybe I'd better
questa chitarra a ciondoloniGiving up dangling this guitar
si trasformi in mitraAnd turning it into a machine gun
e possa emettere altri suoni;So that it utters different sounds,
e che le sei cordeSo that its six strings
per produrre altri rumoriSound a bit more effective
si trasformino di colpoTurning all of a sudden
in sei caricatori;Into six chargers;
e che queste ditaAnd so that my fingers
per produrre qualche effettoGive up plucking strings
anziché grattare arpeggiAnd picking quills,
premano un grilletto;And they pull a trigger instead;
forse può servire soloAnd maybe now I'd better
più la passacagliaComposing a passecaille
che con la sua voceThat with its sweet music
sa intonare la mitraglia.Leads off into a mitraille.
