(1) La Valle dello Shenandoah (in inglese Shenandoah Valley) è una regione degli Stati Uniti, nella Virginia Occidentale, delimitata dai Monti Blue Ridge e dagli Altipiani degli Appalachi. In questo contesto “Oh Shenandoah” potrebbe essere intesa come invocazione e la ragazza essere una qualunque ragazza bianca che vive sulle sponde del fiume. In altre versioni infatti viene chiamata Sally (ad esempio nella versione cantata da Tom Waits)
(2) Missouri è sia uno stato americano che un fiume. In questo contesto si può presumere che dalla valle dello Shenandoah l’uomo si addentri sempre più nel selvaggio Ovest!
(3) l’uomo è ansioso di incontrare la sua innamorata e le promette che non le mentirà (o la tradirà abbandonandola)
