Three Fishers
Charles KingsleyTraduzione italiana di Alberto Tiraferri | |
THREE FISHERS | TRE PESCATORI |
Three fishers went sailing out into the West, | Tre pescatori si misero in mare verso occidente, |
Out into the West as the sun went down; | Verso occidente mentre il sole calava, |
Each thought on the woman who lov’d him the best; | Ciascuno pensava alla donna da cui era amato, |
And the children stood watching them out of the town; | E i bambini stavan ritti a fissarli mentre lasciavano il paese. |
For men must work, and women must weep, | Perché gli uomini debbon lavorare e le donne debbon piangere, |
And there ’s little to earn, and many to keep, | Perché c'è poco da guadagnare e tanti da mantenere, |
Though the harbor bar be moaning. | E il bassofondo del porto sussurra il suo lamento. |
Three wives sat up in the light-house tower, | Tre donne stavano alzate nella torre del faro, |
And they trimm’d the lamps as the sun went down; | Pulivano le lampade mentre il sole calava |
They look’d at the squall, and they look’d at the shower, | E fissarono la raffica di vento e lo scroscio di pioggia, |
And the night rack came rolling up ragged and brown! | E i relitti giunsero portati dalle onde, in bruni frammenti. |
But men must work, and women must weep, | Perché gli uomini debbon lavorare e le donne debbon piangere, |
Though storms be sudden, and waters deep, | Perché c'è poco da guadagnare e tanti da mantenere, |
And the harbor bar be moaning. | E il bassofondo del porto sussurra il suo lamento. |
Three corpses lay out on the shining sands | Tre cadaveri giacevano sulla sabbia scintillante, |
In the morning gleam as the tide went down, | Nel crepuscolo del mattino mentre la mareva s'abbassava, |
And the women are weeping and wringing their hands | E le donne piangevano e si torcevano le mani |
For those who will never come back to the town; | Per coloro che non sarebbero mai più ritornati al paese. |
For men must work, and women must weep, | Perché gli uomini debbon lavorare e le donne debbon piangere, |
And the sooner it ’s over, the sooner to sleep— | Perché c'è poco da guadagnare e tanti da mantenere, |
And good-by to the bar and its moaning. | E addio a quel bassofondo e al suo lamento. |
