| il pescatore ripara la rete luccicante. | A fisherman mends a glimmering net. |
| Nel mare saltano allegri delfini, | Happy porpoises jump in the sea, |
| Giovani passeri si appoggiano alle grondaie | By the rainspout young sparrows are playing |
| E il serpente ha la pelle dorata che ci si aspetta. | And the snake is gold-skinned as it should always be. |

| Le donne vanno per i campi sotto l’ombrello, | Women walk through the fields under their umbrellas, |
| L’ubriaco si addormenta sul ciglio dell’aiuola, | A drunkard grows sleepy at the edge of a lawn, |
| I fruttivendoli gridano in strada | Vegetable peddlers shout in the street |
| E la barca dalla vela gialla si accosta all’isola, | And a yellow-sailed boat comes nearer the island, |
| Il suono del violino si prolunga nell’aria | The voice of a violin lasts in the air |
| E disserra la notte stellata. | And leads into a starry night. |

| E chi si aspettava folgori e lampi, | And those who expected lightning and thunder |
| Rimane deluso. | Are disappointed. |
| E chi si aspettava segni e trombe di arcangeli, | And those who expected signs and archangels' trumps |

| Finché il sole e la luna sono su in alto, | As long as the sun and the moon are above, |
| Finché il calabrone visita la rosa, | As long as the bumblebee visits a rose, |
| Finché nascono rosei bambini, | As long as rosy infants are born |
| Nessuno crede che già stia avvenendo. | No one believes it is happening now. |
