As I roved down through Irish town one evening last July,
The mother of a soldier in tears I did espy,
Saying: "God be with you, Johnny dear, though you are far from me;
For you my heart is breaking, since you went to the Crimee.

"O Johnny, I gave you schooling; I gave you a trade likewise
That you need not have joined the army had you took my advice.
You need not have gone to face your foes where cannons loudly roar,
And thousands fall their victims upon the Russian shore.

He joined the fourteenth regiment, it being a gallant corps;
They landed safe while mentioned upon the Russian shore.
He fought in four engagements with the loss of men each day,
O many's the mother shedding tears for them that's far away.'

"We fought at Balaklava where we did not succeed;
Down in the Valley of Inkerman where thousands there did bleed.
'Twas on the hcights of Alma that we did gain the day,
Young Johnny mentioned all to me, though he is far away."

The fighting at Sebastopol would give the world surprise;
It being so hard to take it, the enemy were so wise.
But Paddy's sons with British guns their valor did display,
And togethcr with the sons of France, thank God, we gained the day.

Now to conclude and finish, I mean to end my song;
I'm thankful to the great God that I've survived so long.
Likewise unto you, mother dear, for me you did adore,
I'm happy to return again to childhood's home once more.

As I roved out one evening in the spring time of the year,
By a shady grove near this town, ms course I chanced to steer ;
I espied a young soldier, and a charming fair maid,
Conversing with each other, in a sequostered shade.

I being filled with admiration when I saw this comely fair,
Her jet-black locks in ringlets hung on her shoulders bare
Her fair form so majestic it caused me to delay,
I stopped awhile lo ambush to hear what they did say.

The young soldier he did reply, these words be then did say,
Cheer up my dearest Sally and do not be dismayed
Right well you know that I most go for hear I cannot stay,
I hear the bugle sounding and that call I must obey.

She says, my dearest Johnny, how can you prove unkind,
To go off to the battle field and leave me hear behind ;
For the Russian, they are powerful by land and on the main,
So do not leave, for I'm sure your slave, my love, for to be slain.

You know my, dearest Sally, the young soldier he did say,
Our regiment they have got the rout and shortly must away,
With thousands of young Irish boy, that joined as well as me
Who now most fly, conquer or die, before the enemy.

But since you cannot stay at home, this fair one did reply,
Along with you I’ll venture let me either live or die ;
And if you from the Russians should by chance receive a
For to bandage up your bleeding wounds my love I'm at your call.

He said, my dearest Sally, you cannot corn, with me,
For hardships in a foreign land with your health would not agree ;
But I hope I will reurnt, home with lots of gold in store,
And God will help our union when the war is all ore.

She said, my dearest Johnny, when once you part from me
I cannot tell but the Russians may gain the victory ;
And then don’t you know, my love, by the foe you may be slain
And left stretched among the heps of dead upon the battle plain.

He said, my dearest Sally, cheer up and banish woe,
For Britannia's sons were always brave wherever they did go,
At Trafalgar, Copenhagen, the Nile and Waterloo
On the plains of India they shewed what they could do.

As this couple they were partiog down her cheeks the tears
did flow,
And then embraced each other with hearts oppressed with woe
She said, may fortune favour you, and victory crown your joy,
My fervent prayer is for your welfare, my brave young soldier boy
