ATTILA JÓZSEF: ANYÁM | MY MOTHER |
| |
A bögrét két kezébe fogta, | One sunday, mother came back home |
úgy estefelé egy vasárnap | Holding a couple of pans in her hands: |
csöndesen elmosolyodott | Smiling so quietly, she sat a little while |
s ült egy kicsit a félhomályban. | To take some rest in the growing dusk. |
| |
Kis lábaskában hazahozta | She brought home, in those saucepans |
kegyelmeséktől vacsoráját, | Leftovers from her rich master’s home; |
lefeküdtünk és eltünődtem, | Then, lying in my bed, I kept thinking |
hogy ők egész fazékkal esznek. | That some folks eat whole potfuls. |
| |
Anyám volt, apró, korán meghalt, | My mother was a small, skinny woman: |
mert a mosónők korán halnak, | She died early, like most washerwomen. |
a cipeléstől reszket lábuk | Their legs can’t stand lugging the hampers, |
és fejük fáj a vasalástól. | Their heads ache from ironing on. |
| |
S mert hegyvidéknek ott a szennyes! | Piles of laundry, that’s their mountains, |
Idegnyugtató felhőjáték | Their cloudscapes are made of steam. |
a gőz s levegőváltozásul | To change climate, a washerwoman |
a mosónőnek ott a padlás. | Has only the attic stairs to climb. |
| |
Látom, megáll a vasalóval. | I see her pressing on without cease, |
Törékeny termetét a tőke | Her thin body broken by Capital, at last. |
megtörte, mindíg keskenyebb lett : | And she grew thinner, thinner and thinner: |
gondoljátok meg, proletárok. | Now think about this, proletarians. |
| |
A mosástól kicsit meggörnyedt, | She stooped from all that laundry, |
én nem tudtam, hogy ifjú asszony, | I didn’t realize she was still young. |
álmában tiszta kötényt hordott, | In her dreams, she wore a clean apron |
a postás olyankor köszönt néki. | And the mailman would say hello to her. |
