[2] Ai tempi di Lars Wivallius non si aveva ancora piena coscienza che la Svezia fosse unita alla terraferma anche nell'estremo nord, che non era stato ancora del tutto esplorato e cartografato. Per cui, spesso, essa veniva creduta un'isola. Ma ancora nello svedese moderno, il termine ö può significare anche "penisola".
[3] Il termine arcaico hjon indicava la consuetudine scandinava dell' "adozione stagionale" di una coppia di bambini contadini da parte di un'altra famiglia. Lo hjon era quindi il quartetto formato da due figli propri e da due in adozione temporanea. La traduzione cerca di rendere in qualche modo questo costume assolutamente peculiare.
[4] Costantemente, in tutta la poesia, si hanno forme arcaiche come tu (per il moderno du), tin, titt (per din, ditt "tuo, -a") e tå "allora" (per då). Si tratta delle forme originali direttamente provenienti da quelle nordiche antiche (þú, þin, þitt, þá). Quelle con la "d-" sono successive e mostrano l'influenza del basso tedesco.
[5] Un altro termine arcaico per "casa, dimora", che trova ancora riscontro nell'islandese ból. In islandese significa piuttosto "fattoria", ma la fattoria nordica è qualcosa di molto diverso dalla nostra.
[6] Ai tempi di Lars Wivallius il termine, il cui primo elemento è entrato nelle lingue germaniche in tempi antichissimi da quelle celtiche (gallico ambactus), significava ancora "artigiano, lavoratore manuale", e non "funzionario pubblico" come significa adesso sotto l'influenza del tedesco Amtsmann.
