GEORGES BRASSENS: LES OISEAUX DE PASSAGEPassing Birds
Ô vie heureuse des bourgeois
Qu'avril bourgeonne
Ou que decembre gèle,
Ils sont fiers et contents
Oh happy life of the bourgeois
Be it that april buds
Or december freezes,
They are proud and happy.
Ce pigeon est aimé,
Trois jours par sa pigeonne.
Ça lui suffit: il sait
Que l'amour n'a qu'un temps.
That pigeon is loved,
Three days by his hen-pigeon
It's enough for him, he knows
that love doesn't last
Ce dindon a toujours
Béni sa destinée,
Et quand vient le moment
De mourir, il faut voir
This turkey has always
blessed his destiny
and when time comes
to die, one must see
Cette jeune oie en pleurs:
"C'est là que je suis née,
Je meurs près de ma mère
Et je fais mon devoir."
This young goose in tears
"It's here I am born
I die near my mother
And I did my duty".
Elle a fait son devoir!
C'est a dire que oncques
Elle n'eut de souhaits
Impossibles, elle n'eut
She has done her duty
This means that never
did she have impossible
wishes. That she had
Aucun rêve de lune,
Aucun désir de jonque
L'emportant sans rameurs
Sur un fleuve inconnu.
No dreams of moon
No desire of junk
carrying her without rower
On an unknown river.
Et tous sont ainsi faits!
Vivre la même vie,
Toujours, pour ces gens-là
Cela n'est point hideux:
And all are made so
Live the same life
Always for those people
This is not hideous.
Ce canard n'a qu'un bec
Et n'eut jamais envie
Ou de n'en plus avoir
Ou bien d'en avoir deux.
That duck only has one beak
And never felt the desire
Or to have none anymore
Or to have two.
Ils n'ont aucun besoin
De baiser sur les lèvres,
Et loin des songes vains,
Loin des soucis cuisants
They have no need
of kisses on their lips
And far away from the vain dreams
Far away from bitter worries
Possèdent pour tout cœur
Un viscère sans fièvre,
Un coucou régulier
Et garanti dix ans.
Own for only heart
An organ without fever
A regular cuckoo clock
And guaranteed for ten years.
Ô, les gens bienheureux!
Tout à coup dans l'espace
Si haut qu'ils semblent aller
Lentement en grand vol
Oh the perfectly happy people.
Suddenly in space
So high that they seem to go
Slowly in great flight
En forme de triangle,
Arrivent planent, et passent
Où vont ils? ... qui sont-ils ?
Comme ils sont loins du sol!
In the shape of a triangle
Arrive glide and pass
Where are they going?...who are they?
How far away from the ground they are
Regardez les passer,
eux, ce sont les sauvages
Ils vont où leur désir
Le veut, par dessus monts
Look at them pass, them
those are the savages
They go where their desire
Wants above mountains
Et bois, et mers, et vents
Et loin des esclavages
L'air qu'ils boivent ferait
éclater vos poumons.
And woods, and seas, and winds
And far from slaveries
The air they drink
Would make your lungs burst
Regardez les avant
D'atteindre sa chimère:
Plus d'un, l'aile rompue
Et du sang plein les yeux
Look at them, before
reaching for their wild dreams
More than one, the wing broken
And blood full their eyes,
Mourra. Ces pauvres gens
Ont aussi femme et mère
Et savent les aimer
Aussi bien que vous, mieux.
Will die. Those poor people
Also have woman and mother
And know to love them
As well as you, better.
Pour choyer cette femme
Et nourrir cette mère
Ils pouvaient devenir
Volailles comme vous,
To cherish this woman
And feed this mother
They could become
Poultry like you
Mais ils sont avant tout
Des fils de la chimère,
Des assoiffés d'azur,
Des poètes, des fous.
But they are first of all
Sons of the chimera
Azure thirsty ones
Poets and crazies.
Regardez-les, vieux coqs,
Jeune oie édifiante:
Rien de vous ne pourra
monter aussi haut qu'eux,
Look at the old cocks
Young edifying goose
Nothing of you will be able to
Climb as high as them
Et le peu qui viendra
d'eux à vous, c'est leur fiente.
Les bourgeois sont troublés
De voir passer les gueux.
And the little that will come
from them to you
It's their droppings
The bourgeois are troubled
To see the beggars pass
Regardez-les, vieux coqs,
Jeune oie édifiante:
Rien de vous ne pourra
monter aussi haut qu'eux,
Look at them, old cocks,
Young edifying goose
Nothing of you will be able to
Climb as high as them
Et le peu qui viendra
d'eux à vous, c'est leur fiente.
Les bourgeois sont troublés
De voir passer les gueux.
And the only thing that will come
from them to you
It's their droppings
The bourgeois are troubled
To see the beggars pass.
