5. VOIALTRI CHE VI SIETE RADUNATI
You who gathered
To the ding dong of the bell,
You can live well relieved
While Hell gets full of hardship.
We've come to salvation,
Let's sing in security
VOIALTRI CHE VI SIETE RADUNATI
The child who was promised to us
Has come to save all our lives.
He was born after nine months
To a virgin so pretty
That the planet of day [1]
Borrows its light from her.
Voialtri, che vi siete radunati
Ai rintocchi della campana
Potete ben vivere consolati
Mentre l’inferno si affanna.
Siamo arrivati alla salvezza,
Cantiamo dunque gioiosamente. [1]
Thus had told us
His father's prophets.
An Angel from the beyond
Came down not long ago
To say "Ave Maria,
Ave plena gratia” [2]
Il bambino promessoci
Viene a salvar a tutti la vita.
E’ nato in capo a mesi
Da una vergine tanto bella
Che la stella del giorno
Da lei assume la sua luce.
In every place and corner,
Only celebrations can be seen.
Some wag their chins,
Some others nod their heads.
When they have trouble staying awake,
They keep yawning.
Così ce lo avevan cantato
I profeti di suo padre.
Un angelo, da un altro lato
È disceso non molto fa
Per dire: “Ave Maria,
Ave plena gratia.”
Only Herod, the villain,
Loathes him.
To kill him
He's sapping him from all sides,
But against the living god,
His power will be worthless.
Per ogni angolo e cantone
Non si vede che fare festa,
Gli uni scuotono il mento,
Gli altri chinano il capo.
Quando non possono più vegliare
Non fanno altro che sbadigliare.
In order to play his trick better,
He feeds the Magi well
And asks them to pass by his street
On their way back.
They know which way the wind is blowing: [3]
He won't even see their shadows.
Solo Erode, quel farabutto,
Per lui prova disgusto,
Per fargli fare il salto [2]
Lo tormenta da ogni parte,
Ma contro il dio vivente
Il suo potere non varrà a niente.
To see this beautiful boy,
We can dispense with (fearful) precautions
For he always stands up there"
To keep good watch:
He doesn't want anything malevolent.
To enter his beautiful garden.

Ché, per meglio giocare il suo tiro,
Fa mangiare bene i Re Magi
E li prega che, al loro ritorno
Ripassino dalle sue terre.
Ma loro sentono bene che odore ha, [3]
Lui non ne vedrà l'ombra.
[1] Poetic expression for "sun"

[2] An angel appeared to Mary; the Latin means "Hail, Mary, full of grace"

[3] Literally: "They well smell the smoke"
