Jews had lived there like Jews,	Простые евреи там жили

Generations of deep-rooted dwellers,	Не знали раздора и фальши.

That is how the town Zvinetshke,	Так жило местечко Цвинечки,
Though smaller and paler with time,	И день проходил вслед за днем.

But suddenly like a thunderclap it came,	Внезапно пришел, окаянный,
The year nineteen forty-one.	Вторжения немецкого год.
The Dniester roars menacingly,	И Днестр бурлил тогда страшно,
The sky, obscured – gray.	И тучи закрыли восход.

Soldiers in gray uniforms	Люди в зеленых мундирах
With rifles ready to shoot.	С винтовками в штэтл вошли,
On the bridge over the Dniester	На мост тот, что был через Днестр,
They wiped them out to the last.	Детей, стариков привели.

The ritual slaughterer with his wife and eight children	А шойхес* с женой, с сыновьями
Wrapped them in his tallis – Shema Yisrael!	Молился, крича: "Шма, Исрол!"**
The cries were swallowed by the Dniester,	Голос их проглочен был Днестром,
The waves silenced their voice.	Молитву пожрал рокот волн...

Today the fields are now green again,	Сейчас там луга зеленеют
And the peasant pastures his cows,	И пашет крестьянина плуг.
As if no Jews were ever there,	И вовсе там нету евреев -
As if nothing had ever happened.	Исчезли бесследно все вдруг!
