La journée que j'épouse, je reçois commandement	The Day of my Wedding I was order'd to leave,
Commandement* de guerre, servir** le Roi Louis	To leave for the War to serve King Louis,
Au sortir de l'église, l'a bien fallu partir.	On coming out of the Church I was commanded to leave.
La partance a été longue, l'a bien duré sept ans	The Service did last so long, some seven Years or more.
Au bout de la septième congé*** ils m'ont donné	When seven Years were o'er I was given my Discharge,
Dans les bras de ma chère j'irai me reposer.	Into the Arms of my Sweetheart I'll finally find some Rest.
La journée que j'arrive, ma femme elle se remarie	The Day when I arrive, my Wife is marrying again.
J'arrive devant sa porte, les trois p'tits coups frappant****,	When I come at her Door I gently knock thrice thereon,
J'ai posé***** ma valise, mon or et mon argent.	I put down my Suitcase, my Money and my Gold.
Et les gens de la noce m'ont convié à souper	All the Folks at the Wedding ask'd me to the Feast.
Et moi qu'était bien aise, je n'ai pas refusé	And, ay! I felt so fine that I did not say nay,
J'ai déplacé ma chaise auprès de la mariée.	I took my Chair and mov'd to the fair Bride's side.
Mais les gens de la noce se****** sont trouvés insultés:	But the Folks at the Wedding felt so hurt by all this:
"Retirez-vous gendarme, retirez-vous d'ici!	“Now go away, you Soldier! Go away and come not back!
La mariée de ce soir elle vous appartient pas."	The Bride you see tonight does not belong to You!"
T'en souviens-tu, la belle, les rires et les serments?	“Don't you remember, Sweetheart, the Smiles and the Vows?
T'en souviens-tu, la belle? Voilà ce soir sept ans,	Don't you remember, Sweetheart? It's just seven Years from then now,
T'en souviens-tu, la belle, que ton mari est absent?"	Don't you remember, Sweetheart, when your Husband had to leave?”
La belle elle me devine, elle s'écrie tous les saints	My Sweetheart now remembers and swears by all the Saints
Elle s'écrie en larmes par la mort de Jésus-Christ:	She cries and swears now by the Cross and by Christ:
