Tri YannEnglish Version by Riccardo Venturi | |
IL BAGNO | THE PENAL COLONY |
Sette aprile. Siamo partiti da Saint-Martin | The seventh day of April. We left St. Martin, |
in settecento, imbarcati sulla « Martinière ». | seven hundred convicts on the « Martinière ». |
Ferri e gabbie per bestie umane, | Cages and chains for human beasts, |
fra tre settimane sarà la Guyana, e l’oblio. | three weeks more, and we’ll be forgotten in Guyana. |
Prével [*] ci ha salutati, dicendoci : | Monsieur Prével greeted us with these words : |
Non è l’inferno, ma è già il purgatorio, | You aren’t in hell, yet you are in purgatory |
ché di qui non uscirete che morti, | for you won’t leave from here but dead, |
che morti, o peggio, per le Isole della Salvezza. | or much worse, for the Islands of Salvation. |
Gli « chaoucs » [**] ci hanno spogliati | The « Chaoucs » have had us undressed, |
e rivestiti a strisce bianche e nere, a ferri e fiamme, | and then dressed in white and black stripes, chains and flames, |
fiamme e ferri, e qui non sei più, | chain and glames, and here you are nothing more, |
povero Guillaume, che il 49302. | poor Guillaume, than number 49302. |
Uccello azzurro dei Caraibi, | Blue bird of the Caribbean, |
vai a dire ai miei figli, a mia madre e a Marie-Jeanne, | fly and tell my children, my mother and Marie-Jeanne, |
vai a dire che ho fiducia in loro, | fly and tell them that I trust them, |
io voglio giustizia, e non grazia o perdono. | I want justice, not pardon. |
Mi porta notizie una nuvola bianca : | A white cloud brings me news : |
Guillaume, un giudice [***], uno scrittore e i bretoni insorgono ; | Guillaume, a judge, a writer and the Bretons are rising up. |
Mi porta notizie una nuvola grigia : | A grey cloud brings me news : |
Sei condannato a dieci anni di Isola Reale. [****] | You have been sentenced to ten years’ Royal Island convictment. |
Mi porta notizie una nuvola rosso sangue : | A blood-red cloud brings me news : |
Sarai gettato a Saint-Joseph, il peggiore dei bagni ; | You will be cast in St. Joseph, the worst prison of all. |
Mi porta notizie una nuvola nera : | A black cloud brings me news : |
Tua madre, tua figlia e Marie-Jeanne sono morte. | Your mother, your daughter and Marie-Jeanne are dead. |
[*] Colonel Prével was the governor both of Saint-Martin-de Ré « temporary jail » for Guyana convicts (as a matter of fact, a prisoner could wait there for years, as in the case of Guillaume Seznec) and of Guyana penal colonies. See the following page on Saint-Martin-de-Ré penal colony. [**]Properly speaking, the « chaoucs » (or « chaouchs ») were, in French colonies, the ushers of civil service departments, but this word acquired the meaning of a penal colony guard. [***]Reference is to judge Victor Hervé, as specified in the Introduction. The « writer » is probably the journalist Petitcolas. [****]The Royal Island (Ile Royale), one of the « Salvation Islands » where also Dreyfus was kept prisoner. |
