IL PROCESSO DI GUILLAUME SEZNECGUILLAUME SEZNEC’S TRIAL

Udite, voi giovani,Hearken ye young people,
e anche voi udite vecchiand hearken, ye old people
del processo d’un cornovagliese,of the trial of a Cornishman,
mastro d’ascia a Morlaix.a skilled carpenter in Morlaix.
E’ forse una vittima ?Do you think he is a victim ?
E’ l’autore di un crimine ?Or do you think he is a murderer ?
E’ onesto, è un assassino ?Is he honest ? Is he a criminal ?
Ma che ne è stato di Quémeneur ?But what has become of Quémeneur ?

la folla si accalca da Pen ar Steir.the crowd is swarming from Pen ar Steir.
Seznec scende con le mani in tasca,Seznec arrives with his hands in his pockets,
brutta impressione, che vergogna.what a bad impression, what a shame.
Però questo comportamentoBut his attitude is not due
non è né orgoglio né disinvoltura, either to pride or impudence,
ma è la vergogna per le manettebut to his shame of being handcuffed
con cui è bloccato da chi lo scorta.to the policemen escorting him.

Odio ingiurie e colleraHate, insults and wrath
sul lungofiume di Quimper, all along Quimper riverside,
folla tutta lungo l’Odet, the crowd fills the Odet banks
e folla sugli scalini del palazzo.and the steps of the Court House.
Odio brividi colleraHate, shivering and wrath,
padri figli figlie e madri, fathers, sons, daughters and mothers
accalcati fitti sul lungofiumemilling around on the riverside
e nei corridoi del palazzo.and in the Court corridors.

L’aula è in fibrillazione.The courtroom is electrified.
« Guardie, fate entrare l’imputato ! »« Guards, let the prisoner in ! »
Giacca blu, un po’ troppo nuova,With his blue jacket, somewhat too new,
brutta impressione, è innaturale.he looks innatural, what a bad impression !
Pubblico cupo, sguardi duri,Gloomy audience, hard-looking eyes,
impiantito scuro, e le paretidark flooring, and bordeaux red
di color bordò ; ‘sto tribunale, walls : this courtroom, good God,
perdio, sembra un catafalco !has such a gloomy and sombre look !

Seznec è forse una vittima ?Do you think Seznec is a victim ?
O il colpevole d’un delitto ?Or do you think he is guilty ?
Dice il falso, è un bugiardo ?Does he tell the truth, or lies ?
Ma avrà ucciso lui Pierre Quémeneur ?Is it he who killed Pierre Quémeneur ?
Odio insulti e collera,Hate, insults and wrath,
sarà mica un capro espiatorio ?is he maybe a scapegoat ?
E’ un mostro, un assassinoIs he a monster, a murderer,
e l’uccisore del Consigliere ?did he kill the Councillor ?

Il presidente è Dollin du Fresnel,The Chief Judge is Dollin du Fresnel
stola d’ermellino e toga rossa :with his ermine stole and his red robe :
abbaia : « Imputato, alzatevi !he barks : « The accused will rise !
Nome cognome età e professione ? »Your name, age and profession ? »
« Seznec Joseph Marie Guillaume,« Seznec Joseph Marie Guillaume,
quarantasei anni, commerciante in legname. »forty six years old, timber dealer. »
Quindi si mette a brontolare,Then he starts mumbling and grumbling
orgoglio ferito – che brutta impressione.with his wounded pride –what a bad impression !

Il « Rapporto sulla moralità »The Morality Report
mette nei guai un po’ l’imputato :gets the accused into some trouble :
« Sornione, astuto, furbacchione,«A sly, crafty, cunning fellow
detestato da tutti quanti. »making himself disliked by everyone. »
Non è solo un interrogatorio,It is no simple interrogation,
ma una vera requisitoriabut a true bill of indictment,
sotto i colpi e sotto i morsithe Chief Judge Dollin du Fresnel
del presidente Dollin du Fresnel.bits the accused like a dog !

Una valigia a Le Havre,A suitcase in Le Havre,
un delitto senza un cadaverea murder without a body,
e l’imputato che ripete :and the accused repeating :
« A Le Havre non ci sono mai stato ! »« I’ve never been in Le Havre ! »
La macchina da scrivere [*],That mysterious typewriter [*]
la macchina da demolire ;and the wrecked car to destroy ;
menzogne e tiri, ‘sto tribunale, lies and nasty tricks, good God,
perdio, che sinistro carnevale.this Court’s some kind of a grim joke !

29 ottobre, mercoledì,Wednesday, 29 October,
testimoni a bizzeffe :witnesses by heaps :
per primi il fratello e la sorella, first, the victim’s brother and sister,
Louis e Jenny Quémeneur.Louis and Jenny Quémeneur.
Poi il cognato, Jean Pouliquen, [**]Then his brother-in-law, Jean Pouliquen, [**]
e la sa lunga, quel notaio.he knows what’s what, that notary public.
E siccome è a lui che il delitto fa comodo,And as he benefits from the crime
ci va pesante come un’incudine :he shouts his heavy accusations :

« Seznec ha organizzato tutto,« It’s Seznec who concocted everything,
fatto tutto, combinato tutto. »planned everything, done everything. »
Pioggia vento burrasca su Quimper,Rain, wind and storm over Quimper,
lampi negli occhi del notaio ;the notary’s eyes are sparkling ;
vento pioggia burrasca e odiorain, wind, storm and hate
le accuse di Pouliquen ;are Jean Pouliquen’s accusations ;
però si sa che lui dovevabut it is known that he owed
160.000 franchi a Quémeneur.Quémeneur 160,000 francs.

Su quarantotti testimoni citatiOf forty eight witnesses at the bar,
quarantatré sono poliziotti.forty three are policemen.
Ieri, martedì, c’erano Vidal,Yesterday, Tuesday, there were Vidal,
scaltro, il « bel meridionale »,that shrewd « Handsome guy from the South »,
e Bonny che crede d’essere un superpoliziotto, and Bonny, professing to be a supercop,
ma l’intrallazzo è la sua tattica ;but his way is only intrigue and swindle ;
e presto ce lo ritroveremoand we’ll meet him soon again
a Parigi, capo della Gestapo ! [***]in Paris, as a Gestapo leader ! [***]

30 ottobre, testimone successivo30 October : next witness at the bar
è Marie-Jeanne, che lui ama tanto,is Marie-Jeanne, Seznec’s beloved wife
cuffia bianca [****], abito nero, dressed in black, with her white bonnet [****]
ombrello dal manico d’avorio.and her umbrella with an ivory handle.
E’ uno sbaglio, troppo da ricchi,Showing so rich is not so wise, yet
ma risponde senza esitare, she answers without hesitation
difende suo marito colpo su colpounremittingly pledging for her husband,
e finisce per sbottare.but finally, she cannot help bursting out :

E continua a ripetere :She keeps on saying to the Court :
« La macchina da scrivere« The typewriter is false evidence,
è una prova falsa dei poliziotti ! »it was put there by the police ! »
Brutta impressione sui giurati,What a bad impression on the Jury,
non lo trovano divertente.they do not find it that amusing.
Certo non s’aspettavano che tipo fosse,Sure, they did not expect her to be
avrebbero voluto vederla crollare, such a fierce opponent ; rather,
e invece è decisa e battagliera.they believed she would soon break down.

Il giorno dopo, Guillaume vedeNext day, Guillaume is watching
curva sotto la sua cuffia, bowed with age under her bonnet,
piena di rughe come una mela andata.her face wrinkled like a wither’d apple.
Con le mani sulle ginocchiaHolding his hands on his knees
Guillaume sorride a Marie-Anne,Guillaume smiles at Marie-Anne,
le lacrime gli escono dagli occhiand tears from his eyes
e gli bagnano le guance.are running down his cheeks.

Seguono i testimoni che avrebbero vistoNext come the witnesses supposed
Quémeneur dopo la sua scomparsa.to have seen Quémeneur after disappearance.
Il presidente si accanisceThe Chief Judge is ruthless to them
a ridicolizzarli tutti…and tries to ridicule them all…
Ma Le Her [*****] è un osso duro,But Le Her [*****] is a tough nut to crack,
lui, è proprio sicuro !he is really sure of what he says !
Il processo cambia imputato :There’s another under trial, now,
Le Her va discreditato.Le Her must be discredited !

L’Accusa si spaventa :The Public Prosecutor is getting afraid :
« si dice che », voci, rumori,a stream of hearsay and rumours,
François Le Her è un seccatore !François Le Her is such a nuisance !
Lo demoliscono senza pudore,He is destroyed without mercy,
pettegolezzi ripresi in coro, gossip, tittle-tattle in choir,
è trasformato in un buffone :he’s an unreliable witness :
« Ma per caso non si è imbattuto« Are you sure you’ve seen him,
in un sosia di Quémeneur ? »and not Quémeneur’s double ? »

2 novembre, giorno dei Morti :2 November, All Souls’ Day,
le arringhe, i corpo a corpo,the pleadings, hand-to-hand struggle.
Guillot, il pubblico ministeroGuillot, the Public Prosecutor,
Poi è il turno dell’avvocato Kahn [******]Then, the word is to maître Kahn, [******]
di fare un’arringa possente e infuocata, truly, his pleading is fire and flames !
ma ad opporsi al presidenteBut he’d rather have opposed
bisognava averci pensato prima…the Chief Judge at the right time…

E senza prove, anzi, senza delitto,Without evidence nor a crime,
senza confessione e senza vittimawithout a confession nor a victim,
Seznec è condannato al bagnoseven members of the Jury
da sette dei dodici giurati.sentence Seznec to penal servitude.
E’ una vittima ?Do you think he is a victim ?
E’ l’autore di un crimine ?Do you think he is a murderer ?
E’ una condanna colpevole,But this is an unjust sentence,
siate maledetti, giurati bretoni !curse upon you, Breton jurors !
Note alla traduzione:

[****] François Le Her conosce bene Quémeneur.

Translation Notes:

[*] Among the few pieces of evidence for Seznec’s prosecution, there was a typewriter that Quémeneur was supposed to have bought in Le Havre, and to have used for typing of an agreement between Quémeneur and Seznec to sell a cottage farm in Traou-Nez. This was supposed to be the motive of the crime. The typewriter was found in Seznec’s house. It had been probably placed there by inspector Bonny to falsify evidence.

[**] Quémeneur’s brother-in-law, the notary public Jean Pouliquen, is Seznec’s main accuser. In fact, Pouliquen profits much from his brother-in-law’s murder, as expressly stated in this most detailed of ballads : Pouliquen owes Quémeneur 160,000 francs, not to mention that Quémeneur has no children and, thus, his brother-in-law becomes his heir apparent as the administrator of his wife’s property (i.e. Quémeneur’s sister). All this is not taken into account by the Court, if not plainly ignored. Later, Pouliquen would become a suspect in the murder (if any).

[***] The facts are real. During German occupation of France, inspector Bonny turns into an enthusiastic collaborationist and forms, together with his acolyte Lafont, a gang of torturers (the Bonny-Lafont gang) in the Gestapo’s pay. On France’s liberation, while Seznec is still in Guyana, Bonny is arrested. After a speedy trial, he is sentenced to death and shot in the back.

[****] François Le Her knows Quémeneur well. He often talks with him on the tramway where he is a conductor. Being one of the few witnesses for Seznec’s defence, he is discredited any way possible ; but he does not give up. Later, he married Seznec’s daughter, Jeanne ; this is why Seznec’s grandson, who has been successfully fighting for the review of the trial, bears the complete name of Denis Le Her-Seznec.

[*****] It is the typical (and often definitely oversized) traditional bonnet that Breton women used to adorn themselves with. Nowadays it is to be observed only on some elderly woman’s head, or in folk feasts. Here’s one of smaller size, and here’s another.

[******] It should be pointed out that Seznec’s attorney for the defense was a Jew. He was to become a prince among French lawyers. Seznec’s trial was his first important case.
