Il cuoco di Salò
Francesco De GregoriOriginale | English Version by Andrea Fedi |
| SALO'S COOK At night I see very beautiful women, who come up here from Venice, and climb, rustling up, the stairs like bundles of roses, and their perfume hangs in the air when the door closes, and so I imagine them naked, waiting. They are actresses who've fled from Rome, or not-yet-famous singers, who stay for a night, for a season. In the morning, they don't have any modesty, when they come down for breakfast you can hear them sing. If the water of this lake was sea water, how many fish I could cook tonight. Even a cook can be useful during a storm, even in the midst of a shipwreck one needs to eat. Because here we make Italy and we die, on the wrong side, on a great day we die, on a beautiful sunny day, on the wrong side we die. And at night, from behind those mountains, we can hear shots, not too far away. Some say it's the bandits, and some say it's the Americans. I wonder what expression they will show on their faces, when they will find me in the kitchen, and whether they will want something for dinner. If the water of this lake could hear me, how many stories I could tell, tonight: fifteen-year-olds torn to pieces by this springtime, forced to go on, even with their broken shoes. Because here we make Italy and we die, on the wrong side, on a great day we die, on a beautiful sunny day, on the wrong side we die. On a great day we die, on the wrong side, on a beautiful sunny day, here we make Italy and we die. |
