QUELLA NOTTE DAVANTI ALLA BUSSOLA [LA BALLATA DELLA BUSSOLA] | THAT NIGHT IN FRONT OF THE "BUSSOLA" |
| |
Quella notte davanti alla Bussola | That night in front of the "Bussola" |
nel freddo di San Silvestro | In the cold New Year’s eve, |
quella notte di Capodanno | That new year’s night |
non la scorderemo mai. | We shan’t never forget. |
| |
Arrivarono i Signori | The Gentlemen they arrived |
sulle macchine lucenti | With their luxury motor cars, |
e guardavano con disprezzo | Casting scornful looks |
gli operai e gli studenti. | At students and workers. |
| |
Le Signore con l’abito lungo | The ladies in evening dress |
con le spalle impellicciate | With their shoulders cover’d by furs, |
i Potenti col fiocchino | The Powerful with their bow-ties |
con le facce inamidate. | And all their starchy faces. |
| |
Eran gli stessi Signori | They were the same Gentlemen |
che ci sfruttano tutto l’anno | Who exploit us all the year long, |
quelli che ci fanno crepare | Those who make us die |
nelle fabbriche qui attorno. | In the factories nearby |
| |
Son venuti per brindare | They came to rejoice and drink |
dopo un anno di sfruttamento, | After a whole year of exploitation, |
a brindare per l’anno nuovo | Hoping that the year to come |
che gli vada ancora meglio. | Will bring them still more profit |
| |
Non resistono quei compagni | The Comrades, they know well |
che li han riconosciuti | All of them and cannot stop, |
ed arrivano i pomodori | And they throw rotten tomatoes, |
ed arrivano gli sputi. | And they all spit at their faces |
| |
Per difendere gli sfruttatori | But someone’s blown in a trumpet |
una tromba ha squillato | To defend those exploiters, |
quando già i carabinieri | The Police are rushing quickly |
hanno corso ed han picchiato. | And is having a free-for-all |
| |
Come son belli i carabinieri | How beautiful the cops are |
quando picchiano con le manette | When they beat up people in handcuffs, |
i compagni studenti medi | The young Comrades in high school age |
dai quattordici ai diciassette. | Fourteen to seventeen years old |
| |
Non la smettono di picchiare | And they don’t stop beating |
se il colonnello non alza un dito | If the lieutenant don’t tell them to stop, |
sono l’immagine più fedele | They’re the most realistic image |
del nostro ordine costituito | Of our established order |
| |
Già vediamo i carabinieri | And we already can see the Police |
che si stanno organizzando | Drawing up in battle array |
per iniziare la caccia all’uomo | To begin the man-hunt |
con pantere ed autoblindo. | With patrol and armoured cars |
| |
Non possiamo andare via | We can’t flee away from there |
né lasciare i dispersi | And leave our Comrades behind, |
siamo ormai tagliati fuori | We’ve been caught into a trap |
per raggiunger gli automezzi | And cannot reach our cars |
| |
Decidiamo di resistere | We decide to hold out |
e si fan le barricate | And we build up barricades |
sono per meglio difenderci | That’s a better way to resist |
dalle successive ondate. | The subsequent attacks |
| |
Dalla prima barricata | From the first barricade |
alla zona dei carabinieri | To the area held by the Police |
sono circa 40 metri | There’s a dark no man’s land |
tutti sgombri e tutti neri. | Of about thirty yards |
| |
Quando cominciano ad avanzare | When the Police begins to advance |
uno di loro spara in aria | A cop fires a shot in the air, |
i compagni tirano sassi | The Comrades they throw stones |
per cercare di fermarli. | Trying to stop the Police |
| |
Loro si fermano un momento | The Police stops for a moment, |
poi continuano ad avanzare | Then they retake their advance, |
non è più uno soltanto | Now it isn’t one only, |
sono in molti ora a sparare. | Now a lot of them is shooting |
| |
Dalla prima barricata | From the first barricade |
vediamo bene le pistole | We can see well the guns, |
ma dalla seconda i compagni pensano | But from the other one, the Comrades |
che siano colpi di castagnole. | Think they are only petards |
| |
Ci riuniamo tutti insieme | We draw back all together |
alla seconda barricata | To the other barricade, |
e gli sbirri tornano indietro | And the cops they retreat, |
vista la brutta parata. | The thing’s taking a bad turn |
| |
Ancora un’ora di avanti indietro | One hour more of attacks |
noi con i sassi loro sparando | We with our stones and they with their guns, |
e tutti crediamo che sparano a salve | And we think they’re firing blank shots |
anche da dentro un autoblindo. | Even from an armoured car |
| |
Ma ad un tratto vedo cadere | But, suddenly, I see a Comrade |
un compagno alla mia destra | Fall to the ground to my right, |
in ginocchio con un buco | He falls on his knees with a hole |
ed il sangue sui calzoni | And his trousers stained with blood |
| |
Mi volto e grido "Sparan davvero!" | I turn and shout: "They’re shooting!" |
e corro indietro di qualche passo | And I run backwards for a while, |
due compagni portano a spalle | Two Comrades carry on their shoulders |
il ferito nella gamba. | The Comrade wounded in one leg |
| |
Correndo forte sulla strada | Running fast on the street’s pavement |
con alle spalle i carabinieri | And pursued by the Police, |
vedo Ceccanti colpito a morte | I can see Ceccanti mortally wounded |
trasportato sul marciapiede. | Being carried on the sidewalk |
| |
Malgrado gli sforzi per aiutarlo | We all do our best to help him, |
è difficile trovar soccorso | But it’s difficult to find rescue |
mentre gli sbirri ti corrono dietro | While we’re pursued by the cops, |
e non ti danno un po’ di riposo. | They give us no respite |
| |
Trovata un’auto utilitaria | Luckily, we find a runabout |
e portato via Ceccanti | And we take Ceccanti away, |
non ci resta altro da fare | There’s nothing more we can do |
che scappare tutti quanti. | But running away in haste |
| |
Forse alla Bussola Per questa notte | Maybe tonight at the "Bussola" |
i padroni si sono offesi | The masters have taken offence, |
loro che ci offendono e che ci uccidono | They who offend us and kill us |
per tutti gli altri dodici mesi. | For the remaining twelve months |
| |
Sarebbe meglio offenderli spesso | We’d better offending them more often |
e non dare mai loro respiro | And never giving them any respite, |
tutte le volte che lor Signori | Every time these Gentlemen |
capitano sotto il nostro tiro | Happen to be within our range |
| |
E a questo punto mi sembra opportuno | And now I think we should make |
fare qualche considerazione | Some remarks on the situation, |
sulle diverse brutte facce | On the different ugly faces |
che ci mostra oggi il Padrone. | The Masters show us nowadays |
| |
Lui ha i soldi per comprarci | They have money to buy us, |
il lavoro per sfruttare | They give work to exploit us, |
i suoi armati per ucciderci | They have their Police to kill us |
la Tv per imbrogliare. | And the TV to cheat us |
| |
A noi non resta che ribellarci | The only good thing we can do |
e non accettare il gioco | Is revolting, refusing their tricks, |
di questa loro libertà | Refusing their false freedom, |
che per noi vale ben poco. | That’s all shit for the people |
| |
A noi non resta che ribellarci | The only good thing we can do |
e non accettare il gioco | Is revolting, refusing their tricks, |
di questa loro libertà | Refusing their false freedom |
che per noi vale ben poco. | That’s all shit for the people. |
