Triste état que d'être soldat
Grand dieu je le vois pour moi :
J'ai déserté, j'ai été arrêté
Par les cavaliers de la maréchaussée.
Enchaîné l'on m'a amené.

Etant arrivé à la ville de Calais
Bataillon était arrangé.
Tambour battant, la musique jouant
Tambour battant que mon cœur est changé !
Il faut mourir ma chère maman.

Etant arrivé à la ville destinée
En prison l'on m'a amené
Dans un cachot renfermé : la dedans
Où attendait …. la mort à tout moment !

Drapeaux déployés, ma sentence annonce
Que j'aurai la tête cassée
Par les grenadiers pour avoir déserté.
Ah ciel quel triste métier
Triste sort, pitoyable mort.

Etant à genoux prosterné devant vous
Vous demandons pardon à tous.
Les yeux bandés, le confesseur auprès,
Dieu nous pardonnera tous.

Grenadier vainqueur, de moi n'aye point peur
Tire moi tout droit dans le cœur
Au même instant le grenadier tira.
A quatre pas la cervelle sauta
Triste état que d'être soldat !

Che triste condizione quella del soldato,
Oh, amici, giudicatelo con quel che mi è successo
ho disertato e mi hanno ripreso
tre granatieri che mi hanno portato
in una cella per esservi giudicato (bis)

tre bei battaglioni mi attendevan lassù
