L'ESECUZIONE DEL DISERTORE

Triste condizione quella del soldato,
gran Dio, lo vedo con me stesso:
ho disertato, sono stato arrestato
dai cavalieri della gendarmeria.
E mi hanno portato via in catene.

Quando sono giunto nella città di Calais
il battaglione era già formato.
Tambur battente con la musica in testa,
tambur battente, come è cambiato il mio umore!
Devo morire, mia cara mamma.

Quando son giunto alla città prescelta
in prigione mi hanno portato
e rinchiuso in una cella: là dentro
dove attendeva...la morte in ogni momento!
Devo morire, mia cara mamma.

Bandiere spiegate, la sentenza annuncia
che io sarò ucciso
dai granatieri per aver disertato.
Ah, cielo, che triste mestiere,
che triste morte, che miserevole morte.

In ginocchio, prosternato davanti a voi
chiediamo perdono a tutti quanti.
Con gli occhi bendati e, accanto, il confessore
Dio ci perdonerà tutti quanti.

Granatiere vincite, non aver paura di me,
e sparami dritto nel cuore.
Nel medesimo istante, il granatiere sparò.
E il cervello mi schizzò via,
che triste condizione quella del soldato!
