L'UNICA SUPERSTITETHE ONLY SURVIVOR
A Bettola stava scendendo la sera
e Lilli era pronta per andare a dormire
birocciai e sfollati per il coprifuoco
ritornavano a cercare un riparo
era il '44 sui monti di Reggio
la notte di San Giovanni
la ronda ha scoperto tre partigiani
venuti per distruggere il ponte
The night was descending over Bettola
and Lili was ready to go to bed
It was 1944, on the mountains near Reggio
Saint John's night
The Nazi patrol found three partisans
who had come to bomb the bridge
They killed a German, but another issued an alarm
The SS went for an outstanding revenge
During the night, soldiers with rifles went through every home
to kill men, women and children.
They were woken up, then led to the kitchen, where they were shot
Lili fell between her grandparents, covered in their blood
The soldiers had brought fuel to light up the houses
but Lili was alive, she managed to reach the window and fall down
Ma la casa bruciava e sarebbe caduta
su Lilli come un colpo di grazia
è molto difficile scappare lontano
a undici anni con la gola ferita
But the house was burning down, and soon it would have fallen
on Lili, like a coup de grace
It's hard to flee
when you're eleven, and badly wounded
e sentiva le grida mischiate agli spari
e le bestie nitrire impazzite
e le voci metalliche degli ufficiali
e sentiva il calore del fuoco
She heard cries and shots,
animals neighing in panic,
soldiers with their metallic voice,
she felt the heat from the fire
L'hanno trovata soltanto al mattino
ferita bruciata ma viva
il postino l'ha messa sulla bicicletta
e portata dai parenti in pianura
She was found in the morning
She had injuries and burns, but she was still alive
The postman put her on his bike
and drove her to her parents', in the plain
Later, Lili healed, and the war ended
and the German left
but for many years, she kept dreaming of gunshots,
and couldn't utter a word
Nowadays, Lili lives a happy life, and is a grandmother to many nephews
but at times, she wakes up in the middle of the night, eyes wide open
and can still see Bettola burning
