O poveri soldati

| ALAS! WE POOR SOLDIERS! Alas! We poor soldiers! Our happy days are over! Up there on the mountains We are now quarter'd. There we stay in comfort, We drink good fresh water, We can see and hear well thunders and lightnings. At night, uncomfortably We sleep on a big table And we feel our poor back Going into pieces. As pillows we have stones We put under our head, They were brought to us From the Appennines. Wine is not allowed On these peaks so high, There's only a small source Of good fresh water. Nobody is seen up there But a shepherd at work Who looks after his sheep In distress and anger. We hear the winds so often Fighting with one another, And that is the way Soldiers take a rest. Poor soldiers in affliction, They don't know what to do For they have no bread And nothing to eat. Let huts, shelters, towers Burn in the fire of hell! Don't give a damn about Modena and its borders. So about Cutigliano And Abetone as well, And about Mount Cimone Down to Fanano. Long live our King, Long live our commanders And all the officers Of our squads. Long live king Ferdinand And his olive green face, Long live king Ferdinand, Long live, live! |
