OriginaleB1a. THE ELFIN KNIGHT
SCARBOROUGH FAIR/CANTICLE, PROVIDED WITH THE ELFIN KNIGHT, WHITTINGHAM FAIR AND ROSEMARY LANE, AND WITH AN APPENDIX ON RIDDLES WISELY EXPOUNDED

A1. SCARBOROUGH FAIR

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
Remember me to one who lives there,
She once was a true love of mine.

Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
Without no seams nor needlework,
Then she'll be a true love of mine.

Tell her to find me an acre of land
Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
Between the salt water and the sea strand,
Then she'll be a true love of mine.

Tell her to reap it in a sickle of leather
Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
And to gather it all in a bunch of heather,
Then she'll be a true love of mine.

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
Remember me to one who lives there,
She once was a true love of mine.

2. CANTICLE

On the side of a hill in the deep forest green
Tracing a sparrow on snow-crested ground
Blankets and bedclothes a child of the mountains
Sleeps unaware of the clarion call
On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves
Washed is the ground with so many tears
A soldier cleans and polishes a gun
War bellows, blazing in scarlet battalions
Generals order their soldiers to kill
And to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten.

IL CAVALIERE ELFO

Via la coperta, via la coperta
Sopra quel colle, via lontano,
Via lontano, fino in Norvegia
La mia coperta non volerà via

Il Cavaliere Elfo siede su quel colle,
Ba, ba, ba, lilli ba
Suona il suo corno a pieni polmoni
Il vento ha fatto volar via la mia coperta

Lo suona a oriente, lo suona a occidente,
Lo suona verso dove più gli piace.

"Vorrei avere quel corno in grembo,
Ed il Cavaliere tra le mie braccia."

Non appena ebbe detto queste parole
Il Cavaliere giunse al suo letto:

"Sei troppo giovane, fanciulla", disse,
"E tu mia moglie non sarai mai."

"Ho una sorella minore", lei disse,
"E si è sposata proprio ieri."

"Se vorrai essere mia moglie
Mi devi fare un bel piacere.

"Mi devi fare una camicia
Senza tagliarla e imbastirla", disse.

"La devi fare senza forbici e coltello
E cucirla senza ago e filo."

"Io ti farò questo bel piacere
Se tu ne farai un altro a me.

"Ho un acro di buona terra
Là, vicino a quella spiaggia.

"Devi ararmela con il tuo corno
E seminarmela con il tuo grano;

Poi fare un carro di pietra e fango,
Un pettirosso lo tirerà fino a casa.

"Lo dovrai tenere nella tana di un topo
E follarlo con la suola delle scarpe;

Poi spularlo nel palmo della mano
Ed imballarlo nel tuo guanto.

"Poi tu dovrai portarlo per mare
E portarmelo a casa asciutto.

"Quando avrai fatto bene queste cose
Vieni da me, e avrai la tua camicia."

"Non lascerò la mia coperta per tutta la mia vita,
Ché serve a coprire mia moglie e i miei sette figli."
Il vento non farà volar via la mia coperta

"La mia verginità allora mi terrò ben stretta,
E il Cavaliere Elfo faccia quel che gli pare."
E il vento non ha fatto volar via la mia coperta
