Nel LP “Un fiorentino a Livorno” (1958) Narciso Parigi incise una...
THE RETURN OF AN EXILE, or AT ONE GLANCE

At one glance,
At one glance, the land came into my sight
In the sunrays peeping at daybreak.
As I saw it,
As I saw it, my heart started breaking
And throbbing so strongly in the breast.

In the the sea mist, so distantly standing
I could make out the lights of the harbour,
And farther off, the Tuscan land, the noble
Fatherland of so many immortals,
Immortals.

Why was I,
Why was I driven into exile,
In remote lands? What was my fault?
Why did hands,
Why did so strong and powerful hands
Tear me from all I had dearest and sweetest?

Working hard in toil, yet with joy and love,
I dreamed of redemption for my people,
In my heart, I only had space for love,
Not for hatred with all its torture,
Torture.

For love's sake,
For love's sake I endured all my pains,
Now I am back from a dreadful island.
But the faith,
But the faith I still keep deep in my heart
Bring I back from that saddest stay.

In a moment will I set my set my foot
On the land where I was born, and where
I experienced love, joys and sorrows,
Where I left all my memories behind me,
Behind me.

I can finally,
I can finally hold in my arms
My wife and my beloved children,
In that purest,
In that purest, most joyful embrace
I rejoice with all them I love.

But forever, my faith and my heart
Will be for all those, who suffer and groan.
The ideals of peace and love
Will always be my sole hope,
Sole hope.
Già allo sguardo
già allo sguardo m’apparve la terra
tra gli albori di un sole nascente
Nel vederla
nel vederla il mio cuore si serra
nel mio petto s’imbalza fremente.

Tra la nebbia lontano lontano
già de’ scorgo del porto i fanali
e non più lungi dal suolo toscano
che fu patria di tanti immortali …
Immortali.
