Hello Lorenzo:

I recently uploaded 11 videos of Sara Nomberg-Przytyk singing in Yiddish, I videotaped on 1986. Included is the anti-war song from WWI, Unter di Grine Felder und Velder. (In the Green Fields and Forests).

It, and 10 others are on my Wolf Krakowski You Tube channel. Check it out.

BTW Sara, as a prisoner, was Mengele’s secretary in Auschwitz.
Read about her life on encyclopedia and on Wikipedia.

Through my my friendship with her son, she was like an auntie to me . . .

Auguri,

Wolf Krakowski

A WW1-inspired song by Mordkhe Gebirtig movingly sung by Sara Nomberg-Przytyk and reported by Wolf Krakowski to our site webmaster, Lorenzo Masetti. Though not the same song, it is quite clear that Mordkhe Gebirtig's song echoes a well known Yiddish folksong from WW1 period, Dos fertsnte yor. Gertrude Steiner thinks even Dos ferntste yor might have been written by Gebirtig. Di vrone appears to be a shorter version of the former song. The lyrics in cursive Yiddish characters are reproduced here in Quadratschrift typeletters from: Mordechai Gebirtig, His Poetic and Musical Legacy, edited by Gertrude Schneider (see link above), respecting the original spelling. The Yiddish spelling used is somewhat different from YIVO standard. The transcription given in the book shows a couple of mistakes and is somewhat “Germanized” (e.g. “selner, sayn, ach”) so I have arranged it according to YIVO principles. [Riccardo Venturi]

The Crow [On the Green Fields and Forests]

On the green fields and forests, Woe, oh woe,
On the green fields and forests,
Lies a bullet-riddled soldier, Woe, oh woe,
Lies a bullet-riddled soldier, Woe.

Blood floods from his eyes, Woe, oh woe,
Blood floods from his eyes,
And his body is torn, Woe, oh woe,
And his body is torn.

Oh crow, black bird, Woe, oh woe,
Oh crow, black bird,
Take my hands, but don't eat my eyes, Woe, oh woe,
Take my hands, but don't eat my eyes, woe.

Oh crow, fly quickly, Woe oh woe,
Oh crow, fly quickly,
And tell my mother her child is well, Woe, oh woe,
And tell my mother her child is well, Woe.

On the green fields and forests, Woe, oh woe,
On the green fields and forests,
A bullet-riddled soldier is dying, Woe, oh woe,
A bullet-riddled soldier is dying, Woe.

Cornacchia nera (Corvus Corone Linn. 1758)

Sui verdi campi e nelle foreste, guai, oh, guai,
Sui verdi campi e nelle foreste,

Dai suoi occhi scorre sangue, guai, oh, guai,
Dai suoi occhi scorre sangue,

Tu, cornacchia, nero uccello, guai, oh, guai,
Tu, cornacchia, nero uccello,

Tu, cornacchia, vola svelta, guai, oh, guai,
Tu, cornacchia, vola svelta,

Sui verdi campi e nelle foreste, guai, oh, guai,
Sui verdi campi e nelle foreste,
