Parole e musica di Bob Dylan
Singolo poi contenuto nell’album “Bringing It All Back Home”

Subterranean Homesick Blues

Johnny's in the basement
Mixing up the medicine
I'm on the pavement
Thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat
Badge out, laid off
Says he's got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid off
Look out kid
It's somethin' you did
God knows when
But you're doin' it again
You better duck down the alley way
Lookin' for a new friend
The man in the coon-skin cap
In the big pen
Wants eleven dollar bills
You only got ten

Maggie comes fleet foot
Face full of black soot
Talkin' that the heat put
Plants in the bed but
The phone's tapped anyway
Maggie says that many say
They must bust in early May
Orders from the D. A.
Look out kid
Don't matter what you did
Walk on your tip toes
Don't try "No Doz"
Better stay away from those
That carry around a fire hose
Keep a clean nose
Watch the plain clothes
You don't need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows

Get sick, get well
Hang around a ink well
Ring bell, hard to tell
If anything is goin' to sell
Try hard, get barred
Get back, write braille
Get jailed, jump bail
Join the army, if you fail
Look out kid
You're gonna get hit
But users, cheaters
Six-time losers
Hang around the theaters
Girl by the whirlpool
Lookin' for a new fool
Don't follow leaders
Watch the parkin' meters

Ah get born, keep warm
Short pants, romance, learn to dance
Get dressed, get blessed
Try to be a success
Please her, please him, buy gifts
Don't steal, don't lift
Twenty years of schoolin'
And they put you on the day shift
Look out kid
They keep it all hid
Better jump down a manhole
Light yourself a candle
Don't wear sandals
Try to avoid the scandals
Don't wanna be a bum
You better chew gum
The pump don't work
'Cause the vandals took the handles

Johnny è giù in cantina
a mischiar la medicina,
io sto giù per terra
a pensare a chi governa,
l'uomo col soprabito,
distintivo in vista, cassintegrato,
dice ha una brutta tosse
vuole la liquidazione.
Sta' attento ragazzo
è qualcosa che hai fatto
Dio solo sa quando
e ci stai riprovando.
Scappa per il vicolo
cerca un altro amico
quel tale col berretto alla Davy Crockett
dentro al grosso recinto
vuole undici dollari

Sta' attento ragazzo
non importa cos'hai fatto
cammina in punta di piedi
non prendere eccitanti
sta' in guardia da quelli
che impugnano gli idranti
pulisciti il naso
occhio agli agenti in borghese

Sta' male, sta' bene
sta' un po' dove ti conviene,
suonano alla porta, chi lo sa
cos'è che la gente comprerà,
metticela tutta, fatti chiuder fuori,
torna indietro, scrivi in braille,
va' in galera, scappa sotto cauzione,
va' soldato se ti beccano.
Sta' attento ragazzo
finisce che le prendi
ma scrocconi, imbroglioni,
sei volte disperati
intorno ai cinema
li trovi a perder tempo.
La ragazza alla Jacuzzi
sta cercando un altro fesso
non seguire nessun capo
ai parchimetri apri l'occhio.

Vieni al mondo, sta' al caldo,
pantaloncini, filarini, impara a ballare,
vèstiti, fatti benedire,
cerca il successo,
fallo per lei, fallo per lui, compra regali,
non rubare, non fregare,
vent'anni d'istruzione
e ti mettono al turno normale.
Sta' attento ragazzo
ti tengono all'oscuro

ti stanno addosso, ti faranno nero!
Gente senza scrupoli, perdenti isterici.

Chumbawamba Anarchy

A song by Chumbawamba from their album Anarchy. The title refers to Bob Dylan. Dylan was at one point in an interview told that people were referring to him as an anarchist. He replied gruffly, "Albert, give the anarchist a cigarette", essentially shrugging off the idea with a sarcastic joke. To anyone knowing the tremendous social influence and power that Dylan's early songs had, this comment is incredibly cynical, and displays a fundamental shift in Dylan's politics and outlook for his own role in society.

Albert is Dylan's manager, Albert Grossman, who also managedRitchie Havens and Peter, Paul and Mary. Grossman died while on the Concorde from New York to London, which may be the source of the line in the song about "burning up the air in his personal jet", although that's just wild conjecture on my part.

The song is all about Dylan the spoiled brat, the poser pop star, and pop stars in general who for the most part are very very far from anarchy (and get further and further from it as they get more rich and famous), despite what the hype says.Chumbawamba of course have a long history of criticizing stardom and pop music (a line from their first album: "I am not a popstar, I'm a part of the class war!), even after their music shifted from punky to dancey and even after they reached super-mega-fame with their hit, Tubthumping. The fact that they remain very politically involved seems to show that they continue to be an exception to the usual pop star sell-outparadigm.

GIVE THE ANARCHIST A CIGARETTE

Albert! Who?
Bobby! Who?
For god's sake, burn it down

Nothing ever burns down by itself
Every fire needs a little bit of help
Nothing ever burns down by itself
Every fire needs a little bit of...

Give the anarchist a cigarette
'Cause that's as close as he's ever gonna get
Give the anarchist a cigarette
Bobby just hasn't learned it yet
Give the anarchist a cigarette
The times are changing, but he just forgets
Give the anarchist a cigarette
He's gonna to choke on his harmonica, Albert

Nothing ever burns down by itself
Every fire needs a little bit of help
Nothing ever burns down by itself
Every fire needs a little bit of...

Give the anarchist a cigarette
A candy cig for the spoiled brat
Give the anarchist a cigarette
We'll get Albert to write you a cheque
Give the anarchist a cigarette
He'll be burning up the air in his personal jet
Give the anarchist a cigarette
You know I hate every Popstar that I ever met

Nothing ever burns down by itself
Every fire needs a little bit of help
Nothing ever burns down by itself
Every fire needs a little bit of...

Give the anarchist a cigarette
Burn, baby, burn
Burn, baby, burn

Give the anarchist a cigarette
Burn, baby, burn
Burn, baby, burn

Give the anarchist a cigarette
Burn, baby, burn
Burn, baby, burn

Give the anarchist a cigarette
Burn, baby, burn
Burn, baby, burn

Nothing ever burns down by itself
Every fire needs a little bit of help
Nothing ever burns down by itself
Every fire needs a little bit of help
Nothing ever burns down by itself
Every fire needs a little bit of help
Nothing ever burns down by itself
Every fire needs a little bit of help
Nothing ever burns down by itself
Every fire needs a little bit of help
Nothing ever burns down by itself
Every fire needs a little bit of help
Nothing ever burns down by itself
Every fire needs a little bit of help
Nothing ever burns down by itself
Every fire needs a little bit of help
Nothing ever burns down by itself
Every fire needs a little bit of help
Nothing ever burns down by itself
Every fire needs a little bit of help

Nothing ever burns down by itself
