what did you learn in school

rambpax
1964: This year, a young songwriter and singer called Tom Paxton recorded a long play with 15 songs in Elektra Records. He was 26 years old, and this was the second recording of his career as a musician. In the middle of side 1 there was a short song (less than two minutes long) that provided an acid and satirical critique to the ideological function of schools. The title of the song is a question that most parents - partly because of curiosity, partly because often we cannot find a better way to begin a conversation -ask our children on the way home after each school day: ‘What Did You Learn in School Today’.

The irreverent child of the song responds, among other things, that Washington never tells lies, that everyone is free, that the government must be strong, and that is always right and never wrong. The song quickly became an icon among protesters of the Vietnam War, and it became very popular in many countries when it was also recorded by singers like Pete Seeger. The song is certainly short, but its catchy music and its mordant lyrics questioning the school lessons immediately touched a cord among the youth. - History of Education
What did you learn in school today,
Dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today,
Dear little boy of mine?
I learned that Washington never told a lie.
I learned that soldiers never die.
I learned that everybody's free,
And that's what the teacher said to me.

That's what I learned in school today,
That's what I learned in school.

What did you learn in school today,
Dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today,
Dear little boy of mine?
I learned that policemen are my friends.
I learned that justice never ends.
I learned that murderers die for their crimes
Even if we make a mistake sometimes.

That's what I learned in school today,
That's what I learned in school.

What did you learn in school today,
Dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today,
Dear little boy of mine?
I learned that Government must be strong;
It's always right and never wrong;
Our leaders are the finest men
And we elect them again and again.

That's what I learned in school today,
That's what I learned in school.

What did you learn in school today,
Dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today,
Dear little boy of mine?
I learned that war is not so bad;
I learned about the great ones we have had;
We fought in Germany and in France
And someday I might get my chance.

That's what I learned in school today,
That's what I learned in school.

Cosa hai imparato a scuola? Dai, ... dimmi figlio mio.
Cosa hai imparato a scuola? Dai, ... dimmi figlio, dai.

Che è meglio fidarsi della Polizia,

Questo ho imparato a scuola, sai? Non lo scorderò mai.

Cosa hai imparato a scuola? Dai, ... dimmi figlio mio.
Cosa hai imparato a scuola? Dai, ... dimmi figlio, dai.

Version française / Versione francese / French version / Ranskankielinen versio: Graeme Allwright

QU'AS-TU APPRIS A L'ÉCOLE?

Qu'as-tu appris à l'école, mon fils
A l'école aujourd'hui
Qu'as-tu appris à l'école, mon fils
A l'école aujourd'hui

Même si le maître parfois me gronde
C'est ça qu'on m'a dit à l'école, Papa
C'est ça qu'on m'a dit à l'école

Qu'as-tu appris à l'école, mon fils
A l'école aujourd'hui
Qu'as-tu appris à l'école, mon fils
A l'école aujourd'hui

Que les gendarmes sont mes amis
Et tous les juges très gentils
Que les criminels sont punis pourtant
Même si on s'trompe de temps en temps
C'est ça qu'on m'a dit à l'école, Papa
C'est ça qu'on m'a dit à l'école

Qu'as-tu appris à l'école, mon fils
A l'école aujourd'hui
Qu'as-tu appris à l'école, mon fils
A l'école aujourd'hui

A l'école aujourd'hui
Qu'as-tu appris à l'école, mon fils
A l'école aujourd'hui

Chanson française – Qu’as–tu appris à l’École ? – Graeme Allwright – 1965

kerro, poikasein.

igazságos a rend, hogyha tévednék

vezetőink a jók közt a legjobbak.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN AT HOME TODAY

What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
I learned that school is now my home
I learned to study all alone
I watch TV and the internet
For the education I can get
That’s what I learned at home today, that’s what I learned at home

What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
I learned that policemen are my friends
I learned they needn’t make amends
I learned that kneeling on a black man’s neck
Means they won’t lose their pay cheque
That’s what I learned at home today, that’s what I learned at home

What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
I learned delays caused many deaths
The virus comes with every breath
I learned to protect myself with a mask
I learned there’s things I shouldn’t ask.
That’s what I learned at home today, that’s what I learned at home

What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
I learned that Britain’s in the lead
For wasted millions and for greed
Corona virus for the poor
While the rich are gathering more and more.
That’s what I learned at home today, that’s what I learned at home

What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
I learned that the cabinet have no cares
Because they are all millionaires
They all went to public schools
They learned how to bend the rules
That’s what I learned at home today, that’s what I learned at home

What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
I learned when banners are unfurled
That protest spreads around the world
I learned that change is up to me
I learned that this world can be free
That’s what I learned at home today, that’s what I learned at home.

Covid 19 version by Pat Lamanna
WHAT DID YOU LEARN AT HOME TODAY (US Version)

What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
I learned that school is now my home,
I learned to study all alone
I watch TV and the Internet
for the education I can get
That’s what I learned at home today, that’s what I learned at home.

What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
I learned that denial causes death
The virus can lurk on anyone’s breath
I learned to protect myself with a mask
I learned that there’s things I shouldn’t ask
That’s what I learned at home today, that’s what I learned at home.

What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
I learned that democracy can die,
when our leaders cheat and lie
I learned that justice never ends,
For the president and his friends
That’s what I learned at home today, that’s what I learned at home.

What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
I learned that our government doesn’t care
If bombs and tear gas fill the air
I learned that the President called in the cops
So he could get his photo ops
That’s what I learned at home today, that’s what I learned at home.

What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
I learned that some cops take a knee
when people protest peacefully
But others kill Black women and men,
And they do it again and again
That’s what I learned at home today, that’s what I learned at home.

What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
What did you learn at home today, dear little girl of mine?
I learned when banners are unfurled
That protest spreads around the world
I learned that this world can be free
I learned that change is up to me
That’s what I learned at home today, that’s what I learned at home.
