“[…] Arkadia II and III, "For the Mother and the Friends", are based on poems by Manos Eleftheriou, a gifted young Athenian. His work is full of folk imagery and symbolism, which enables him to describe life under the Colonels. When he speaks of Madonnas, he addresses the hundreds of mothers who mourn their dead or exiled sons and daughters. “Μέσα σε κήπο” ("I Sat in a Garden") says that Greece was once a garden where one could sit quietly with friends, but that all this is finished.

IN UN GIARDINO

In un giardino sedevo, in un orticello
una domenica dopo pranzo, riposando

Incontrai i miei amici, e andammo a passeggiare

e ogni domenica torna in sogno quella passeggiata

Incontrai i miei amici, e andammo a passeggiare

AMIDST A GARDEN I SAT

Amidst a garden I sat
amidst an orchard
One Sunday afternoon
A Sunday, a day of rest.

I met with my friends
and we took a walk
on the narrow byways of Terpsithea
and at Passalimani

Now the garden has vanished
and your friends have scattered
and your walk like a dream
appears to me on every day of rest.

I met with my friends
and we took a walk
on the narrow byways of Terpsithea
and at Passalimani
