Joe Fallisi.
Joe Fallisi.

stanchi, ammassati come animali,

pensa mentre resta a terra, in cella, ha solo mani nelle mani;

BEYOND THE SEA

After war, Italy,
Gunpowder and blood smell lingered in the air,
And that’s a smell that never fades away.
That was our food, a food like time
to wait for harvests and we didn’t have enough time.
Suitcases full of dreams and savings,
But savings went away when we paid our fee to board
For America.
Tired, stacked like beasts, when I got to the immigration
They mistook my name but I kept the initials:
G. Capone
Barber is my job, sir, the first money I got
Went for a cardboard and wood house and after…nothing
And I still have nothing,
I only had a precious thing in my whole life
And that’s a son named Al.

The moon is high, the night is warm.
The light is shining on the lampara.
Beyond there the shore is not far away,
I feel your heart beating.

This is the story of Nicola
shoemaker from Torremaggiore that crossed the ocean
Thus crossing his path with history.
He left all he owned, that was really nothing, at seventeen
Sailing on a steamship loaded of his comrades.
When he reaches America he’s just a teenager
Alien from an out spaced part of Europe..
He works from day to night and at night ‘till becomes day,
He doesn’t understand the language
But he thinks a lot,
So he joins in the fight of his far seeing comrades
Wanting the same legitimate rights
For Italian as for American born guys.
Wednesday he’s arrested, if prejudice rules
You don’t need evidences to condemn him,
Just clues.
“Maybe tomorrow it will change”
He thinks but he’s grounded in a jail
He can only hold his own hands, and that’s the closing act:
Sentenced for a what he’d never done, dies,
Executed by mistake, Nicola Sacco.

The moon is high, the night is warm.
The light is shining on the lampara.
Beyond there the shore is not far away,
I feel your heart beating.
