"Di madre ebrea" [k]

kaczfuma

(Te niemieckie przepaście i szczyty)
Wbrew mej woli, a gwoli ucisku
Wyniesiony pod boskie błękity
Pismo święte z wszechwładnej łaciny
Na swój własny język przekładam:
Ożywają po wiekach
Dawne cuda i czyny,
Matką Ewa znów, Ojcem znów – Adam.

Bliźnim jest mi tragiczny Abraham
Gdy poświęcić ma syna w ofierze;
Widzę ogień na Sodomy dachach,
Gdzie zwęglają się grzeszni w niewierze.
Bezmiar winy i kary surowość
Brzmią prawdziwie w mym szorstkim języku.
Na początku jest słowo,
I okrutnie brzmi słowo,
Ale spójrz wokół siebie, krytyku!

Grzechy Rzym za gotówkę odpuszcza,
Lecz w wojennej się nurza rozkoszy.
Papież w zbroi, w ubóstwie tkwi tłuszcza,
Z której groszy katedry się wznosi.
W nawach katedr transakcje wszeteczne,
Ksiądz spowiednik rozgrzesza za bilon.
Tak jest, było i będzie,
Zło i dobro jest wieczne,
Lecz nie może być wieczny Babilon.

Z tym więc walczę ja, mnich Augustianin,
Moralności teolog – to przytyk,
Bo w stolicy wołają – poganin!
Reformator, heretyk, polityk!
Tak, papieską ja bullę spaliłem,
Lecz szukajcie miast, które on spalił!
Ja na wrotach kościelnych
Tezy swoje przybiłem,
On mnie wyklął, a mnisi śpiewali.

Lecz niech czyta, kto umie,
Niech nauczy się czytać!
Niech powraca – do Słowa!

Martin Luther

Here at Wartburg atop a great cliff
(Oh, the German abysses and heights)
Kept away from the place where I lived
And yet closer to God’s bright blue skies

I translate the Scripture from Latin
Into German, my native tongue
And I come back to Eve
And I come back to Adam
The old deeds again can be sung

Abraham comes to life as my neighbour
Nearly killing his own younger son
Sodom melts in a godsent inferno
And the lives of its sinners are done

The hard punishment, the guilt without end
Still ring true, though coarse is my speech
In the beginning – the Word
And how cruel – the Word
But look ‘round, critic, look, I beseech

You can buy an indulgence in Rome
While the pope indulges in war
People starve so he may play his role
People starve so cathedrals may soar

Trade in churches – is that not disgusting?
And you can freely bribe an absolver
So it has been, so it will be
Good and evil are lasting
But the Babylon’s days will be over

As Augustine fought, I also fight
I’m a moralist – here I’m critical
For the capitol calls me ‘a blight’
My reforms: ‘heretic’, ‘political’

Yes, I watched how the papal bull burnt
He burnt towns, though, that failed to recant
And I put all my theses
On the Castle Church Gate
And he cursed me, and made the monks chant

The words burn, so they need to be burnt
In the ashes all words become one
But my dialogue with God will remain
For it hung from the wood like His Son

Leave the scandal to the priestly elite
Let the world live the pain of new birth
But let all people read
Let them learn how to read
Let them come – back to the Word
